Yes should definitely be ahead of Juice. Like way ahead of Juice.

One-year rental.

Jimmy Johnson was as good a CB as Deion and close as a returner.

I wish people would read these posts before commenting. It was clearly stated that one year players weren't included. Two good years were required to make the list.
Rathman over Juice and Seifert of Carroll. Carroll was only the DC from 1995 to 1996. Seifert was the DC for 8 seasons.

I love Kittle but on that team prime VD is a better fit and a much more dangerous weapon.

I agree for the most part. I think Davis on this team would be putting up the same, if not better numbers than Kittle. Kittle is my favorite players on the team too so it's hard for me to say that. Davis was a terrific blocker as well, but I think Kittle is a more willing blocker and enjoys it more.
Excellent post by Armchair. Thanks.

There are a couple of choices that I disagree with, such as Peterson and Iupati, but that is inevitable. The omission of Seifert is in my view the most serious. But perhaps the GM position should have been included? I would nominate John Lynch.

Happy Thanksgiving Faithful,

As we get closer to the Thanksgiving holiday I thought I'd provide something fun to debate rather than politics or crypto. Here's the game:

Create the best 53-man squad of All-Time San Francisco 49ers players.
1. I used a 4-3 defense based on the players I selected but you could choose a 3-4 as we have used both.
2. I used the current roster allotment that our 2022 team is using.
3. I did not select any players that only spent a short time in San Francisco (i.e. Deion Sanders, Randy Moss, Rickey Jackson, etc.). My rule was that they must have had at least two strong seasons in San Francisco. This also ruled out players who spent their better years somewhere else (i.e. Richard Sherman, Y.A. Tittle).
4. I gave preference to players who are in the NFL Hall of Fame, made the NFL All-Pro team, were selected to Pro Bowls, or have had their numbers retired by the 49ers.
5. I tried my best to select players who predominantly played at a certain position (i.e. Ronnie Lott who played CB and FS).

Offense (25; starters in bold)
QB: Joe Montana, Steve Young, John Brodie
RB: Hugh McElhenny, Frank Gore, Roger Craig
FB: Joe Perry, Kyle Juszczyk
WR: Jerry Rice, Gene Washington, John Taylor (KR)
TE: George Kittle, Brent Jones, Vernon Davis
LT: Trent Williams, Joe Staley
LG: Guy McIntyre, Mike Iupati
C: Jesse Sapolu, Forrest Blue
RG: Randy Cross
RT: Bob St. Clair, Harris Barton
WR: Terrell Owens, Dwight Clark

4-3 Defense (26; starters in bold)
DE: Fred Dean, Justin Smith, Dwaine Board
DT: Leo Nomellini, Charlie Kruger
DT: Bryant Young, Dana Stubblefield, Michael Carter
DE: Cedrick Hardman, Nick Bosa
OLB: Charles Haley, Julian Peterson
MLB: Patrick Willis, Navorro Bowman
OLB: Dave Wilcox, Kenna Turner
CB: Jimmy Johnson, Kermit Alexander
CB: Eric Wright, Don Griffin, Abe Woodson (PR)
FS: Ronnie Lott, Dwight Hicks, Merton Hanks
SS: Tim McDonald, Carlton Williamson

PK: Robbie Gould
P: Andy Lee
KR: John Taylor
PR: Abe Woodson

Head Coach: Bill Walsh
Offensive Coordinator: Mike Holmgren
Defensive Coordinator: Pete Carroll

I'd love to hear your thoughts on my team. Feel free to agree or disagree and make your own team if you feel so inclined. We certainly have had some amazing players play for our San Francisco 49ers and I'm proud to be a lifelong fan.

GO NINERS!

I wouldn't put Stubblefield on there. The year he got 9 sacks or whatever it was, 6 of them came against the same guy in their two games against the Rams.

I think you are limiting yourself by just including players that meet certain criteria. I have no issue with leaving off one year rentals but it seems to me that Warner has to be on that list somewhere and I would take Armstead or Buckner over Stubblefield any day. When he went chasing after the money he essentially disappeared. Seems as though he had some legal issues as well.

Another factor would be what era are we talking about? Guys like Wilcox were good in his day but I don't know how he would hold up if he was expected to function in today's passing game. Also seems like it would be hard to keep Bosa off the list. Personally, I wouldn't put Owen's on the list either just because I think he's such a jerk, but that's just me.

Really? Wow. I remember Davis for his bipolar outbursts and hands of stone. I did love him while he was here, but putting him on even ground with Kittle is silly, let alone putting him ahead. Kittle is a way better blocker, and not once did I hear national media debate whether he was the best in the league. He's had fewer catches this year, but not because he's doing anything wrong. And anytime he has the ball he's dangerous.
QB
Joe Montana
Steve Young
John Brodie
RB
Frank Gore
Hugh McElhenny
Roger Craig
FB
Tom Rathman
Joe Perry
TE
Vernon Davis
Brent Jones
George Kittle
WR
Jerry Rice
Terrell Owens
Dwight Clark
Gene Washington
Billy Wilson
Tackle
Bob St. Clair
Joe Staley
Harris Barton
Guard
Guy McIntyre
Howard Mudd
Jesse Sopolu
Center
Randy Cross
Bruce Bosley
Forrest Blue

Kittle and Trent Williams will likely move up with more years. Randy Cross is the long snapper.

As much as I love Rathman I couldn't put him ahead of Perry
Thanks for the great feedback and nice comments. I love learning about 49er history and players throughout the eras. Three things.

1. After compiling this roster I'm convinced that no other NFL franchise could put out their all-time best and beat this team.

2. Tom Rathman is one of my all-time players and I could absolutely be convinced to put him on this list.

3. Are we to the point yet where I should put Bosa on the list as our best DE? He's a beast!

McKittrick as OL coach and K as DL coach. They have to be there.

VD looked like Tarzan, played like Jane.
He was stronger and faster than most anyone, but never played to his potential.
Kittle has a bigger impact for his team than he did.
