Time for the adults to have the conversation that we need to have about Jimmy G

First, I hope that this week--Black Friday week--is chaotic and that you spend needless money on things that you will never, ever, really use. Only to do it again next year. All the while cursing yourself for doing so. It is almost like we replaced one misplaced holiday of gorging oneself with another. We have totally forgotten what we should be thankful for--even if the history behind the holiday is not pleasant--as opposed to what we want. Hmm.

It is time friends to talk about something that needs to be addressed, and no, the Lance thread or the HIMmy G thread does not talk about it. They, instead, often discuss the other, sometimes totally forgetting that their respective threads are about the people whose name adorns them. In fact, in my estimation, this is less about them and more about admitting to a mistake. This thread is about us.

We as fans, the ownership, and Kyle/John should not have sought the end of the Jimmy Garoppolo era. While many will disagree, I tend to view Jimmy G as one of the best quarterbacks we have had since Garcia. In fact, he might be better than Garcia already. The problem is that missed throw in the Super Bowl--I would remind you that Jeff Garcia never even sniffed a Super Bowl. As if that, alone, was the reason we lost. I am fortunate enough, and old enough, to say that I have seen all of the Niner Super Bowls. The earliest, I was a child, the latest, I was entering my mid-life. And therefore, though, I am no X's and O's joe, I have seen a lot of Niner football. Because of the privilege that experience has brought to me, I too, have adopted an elitist perspective about what great quarterbacking play looks like. You must forgive me, I grew up with Joe and Steve (and the other Steve, Elvis, and the rest) and by comparison everything else is substandard.

And even so, we as fans, and I have addressed this before, have been so fortunate. Spoiled even. We have taken part in seven Super Bowls, five wins and two painful losses. When I was kid, I thought that anytime we got in the Super Bowl, we were guaranteed to win it. How foolish. I was wrong and naive.

Yet, I was almost right...and so, like some of you, I stubbornly held on to the notion of doing things the way we had always done them. Never realizing, of course, that losing is part of the journey. You see that is the problem. We keep expecting things to look familiar to our past glory. But, it simply will not. Oh, there is legacy here. Especially for Kyle. But losing is part of this journey. It makes victory even more sweet. Indeed, we have tried to deny Jimmy G the dignity of evolving from a loss to get better. Because, we thought, we knew better. That what we needed was what others had. No, what we needed was time, patience, good health, and CMC. (In time, we will also need luck, but that is yet to come.)

We also missed something that was right before our eyes all along. This team loves Jimmy G. Yeah, I know, sometimes that does not amount to much, but friends, I think this time it does. You see when you love someone, you put up with their stuff. We all have it. God knows I do. But you do it because you know you were better off with them as opposed to without them. We are better off with Jimmy Garoppolo as our quarterback. And the players know it. It is about time, we realize it as well.

We made a mistake and it will hurt people because it means moving on. It means we gave up multiple picks. But sometimes, life demands you learn things the hard way. If at the end of this journey, we end up with our sixth title, the price for our arrogant treatment of a dude that generally is loved, and loves being the quarterback of this team, will be high. It will cost us players that we will not be able to re-sign. But in the end, it will be what we should have done all along. Because it not only meant we have won, but that we will likely continue to do so in the future.

It's not. It is about how we perceive him. Not him. We expect him to be something akin to what we have seen. He is not nor should he be. The problem is us. Thus, go back, read again.

Me too.
GREAT POST.

The legacy that is 49er football is both a blessing and a curse. You have laid that out so well. When we look in our rear-view mirror we see quality blessing after quality blessing, with enough failure sprinkled in to teach us to appreciate more fully those blessings.
