The offense was average all game...pretty underwhelming performance. The Oline let Jimmy get crushed. I will caveat that all by saying the Saints D is really good. A notch below the Niners level good.
I think our defense is weird. It's oddly great. Between the 20s they were giving up whatever the Saints wanted. The goal line D was fantastic which ultimately led to a shutout. It was a weird shutout however since they were moving up and down the field especially the second half easily.
Overall a good gritty win I suppose. Nothing wrong with that but the offense better bounce back.
This is a very good point. can't explain it but it has happens to us frequently. The seasttle win geno smith was....32 OF 35? Something like that.
Lots of teams get yardage on us, NOT in garbage time. It's weird. I think Ryans doesn't go nonlinear soon enough.
AND we still don't have the bookend to Bosa.
We allow a lot of underneath passes because we refuse to let teams beat us over the top. You should take a look at the opponent QB's YPA. Its typically pretty low. Our biggest issue on defense is 3rd and short. Broadcast said we are the worste in the league on 3rd and short. We are one of the best in the league in 3rd and medium and long.
I think we will be better at 3rd and short with Armstead in the lineup.
This. I expect the interior run game will be even better when Armstead is back.
But man... The defense is interesting to watch. Schematically, it does seem like we aim to take away the deep/intermediate stuff and are okay with allowing the short/underneath because our linebackers and secondary are so good at swarming to the ball and tackling. It means that a team would have to play smart, disciplined football to drive the length of the field on us. That can be very hard to do, because offenses more often than not will make a mistake---false start/holding penalties, dropped passes, negative runs, sacks... and then they find themselves in 3rd and long, where Bosa and the rest of the D-line can really get after the QB.
Only a number of offenses in the league can play like that. The Rams tried to methodically move the ball against us in both games this year, but especially the last game... when the offense gained a lead, they had to try and do more intermediate/downfield passing concepts and our pass rush came alive. Our defense is very good and you need a good offense to contend with them.
I feel like our pass rush hasn't been as good as 2019 when we had rookie Bosa, healthy Dee Ford, Buckner, and Armstead... but Bosa has improved since then... the secondary/linebackers are better all-around... and hopefully, the defensive line comes alive late in the season like they did last year. For whatever reason, in the back half of the season, that defensive line was RAVENOUS in getting at the QB. (I thiiiiink that's when Armstead moved to DT).
So yeah, TLDR, we need Arik Armstead back.
