You stated that it was a coaching point to have the safety cover the dig on the play where Hill scored a TD. It looked like from the film that there were two defenders covering the dig route. What advantage is there to have two defenders cover the dig and have only the corner with outside leverage cover the post?

Thats just how Saban notates how to cover "houston" which is what he calls a Mills concept, in cover 7 - which is a palms.

The idea is that it frees up the Mike to cover anything in and short from the #3.

I wish I had a little better detailed explanation but that's what is in his playbook. I'm sure there's a more detailed explanation in meetings but I had to find the written out matching responsibilities for that concept was on page like 258 of 548 pages.

The vast majority of defensive playbooks spend time on run fits for every coverage and offensive formation and blitzes. Of dabans playbook it's probably 250 pages of fits, 100-150 pages of terms and random section breaks or headers, then 100-150 of coverages.

Same thing with Pete Carrols playbooknin Seattle. Similar breakdown, just smaller. 258 pages I think.

Thank you for the explanation. It just seems like an impossible task for a corner to cover that post route with outside leverage. Should Ward not have taken the outside leverage or was he correct in doing so?

So I reached out to a former NFL QB who came up under Reid. He stays pretty anonymous, but I asked him about this play and he said the same thing I did. They matched it correctly just got beat by Hill on a well executed play.

So directly from the horses mouth, Hufanga took responsibility for that play. I watched the interview on the Richard Sherman podcast.

I think Huf is being nice. But I won't argue with him.

Its possible they had a clamp call on Hill and if so Hufanga has to play inside and under Hill so they clamp him

So most likely something opponent specific?

Quarters is a very flexible coverage call. It can be ran with different rules to each side of the field. What jd mentioned about "clamp" is a way to execute Quarters.

jd, did you mean "bracket"? That's the call that doubles the #1. Who knows what terminology is used, but that's what I think it is if Huf was supposed to double the #1 (THill).
If what Huf says is true, that the touchdown is on him, then the call was 'bracket' and he didn't obey his assignment. In the pic below, Mooney is C and Huf is SS. Except on the actual play, Huf matched the Dig from the #2.

So, "clamp" is a call saban uses to double any in breaking route from the #1 deeper than 12 yards.

I wish posting pictures from my phone or anywhere was easier or I'd show the pics from sabans playbook. I got a whole "clamp" section with rules and everything from the same guy I posted above. It was a few weeks ago. The guy has a treasure trove of defensive stuff. Thousands of thousands of pages of playbooks I got from him.

Today he sent me a print out of the corner/safety rules for palms from either a DC or DB coach. Super detailed.

I was surprised you didn't rip into him for that ill-advised throw across his body towards the middle of the field. Luckily it didn't hurt, actually it helped (defensive PI), but those are the types of plays we don't need to see him try to make.

The play with the Sail concept (Kroft completion) showed he actually is looking to confirm that the route is open and isn't throwing blind. Sail versus Cover3 is a good playcall and a QB might be anxious to throw it after confirming the coverage, but on that play the CB squatted on the Sail route for a tick. Had Brock thrown it on rhythm, it could have been an INT, but he waited until the CB bailed deep enough for Kroft to be open.

Thanks for taking the time to go back to the preseason. I would have never known that was a rookie QB in his first NFL regular season game. I fear some of those really tight window throws will result poorly, but until that happens I am very encouraged by his willingness to fit it in. He did not play scared and showed anticipation, eluded pass rushers, and was taking a hit to make a play. MIA showed a variety of coverages and he was able to succeed.
Great breakdown as always! Thanks again

Nice, nice. I feel better about him starting and understand why they're not freaking out that we will have to start our QB3 for the rest of the season.
I'm actually pretty confident he's going to make big time throws... I'm confident he's going to miss some reads too. Which is fine. The defense should hold the opposing offense, and our own playmakers will do what they need to do.

But he can't kill us with the backbreaking mistakes, like the one you pointed out, where he got lucky that he didn't fumble the ball. I think that's the thing I'm watching out for. If he can have some solid production and not commit any turnovers... I feel pretty good about winning our division... and hopefully, we have players that crank it up a notch in the playoffs to help us overcome the teams that are looking like juggernauts right now.

On that 3rd and 1 where he passed up on Kittle deep over the middle, I think he just wanted to make sure he got the 1st down... nothing contested. And threw a nice soft ball for Deebo to catch. I'm not saying he planned that all up, but I think that's where the hesitation came from.

Maybe Kyle will tell him "just go for the big play next time, I'll have your back and go for it on 4th down if need be."
Sir if you can breakdown Purdy's not an INT this week.
Did he get fooled or just a failed tight pass?
hey jonny can you do a film review of all our busted coverage... that seems important right now.
