Why have replay if you can't use your brain and common sense? On no planet did Davante Adam's catch that ball on the drive to tie the game. Both arms are on the side of the ball and the ball is laying on the ground. Does he have a 3rd arm under the ball? That ball was 100% laying on the ground.

Like I said earlier you could see the stitched part or stripe of the football move while on the ground. They just showed it again on NFLN. f**k those refs hope they enjoy that envelope of cash they got for that game.

They also missed a holding penalty by the Raiders on that 76 yard TD pass play. They flagged the Niners for defensive holding but missed an obvious hold in the backfield by the Raiders that they showed on replay. That play should have been called back with offsetting penalties.

My comment on replays is we have more than ever. The games are constantly stopped to review everything from catches, to TDs, to targeting. All they do is make the games longer. They still don't always get the cals right. If it takes 2,3,5 minutes to review a play then it can't be overturned. Period. That was part of the original intent when they started doing this. If you need to look at a play from 6 different angles and run it in super slow motion then it should just stand as called. If thye show a replay on the big screen and it's an obvious blown call then overturn it. Football wasn't meant to be played with a micrometer.

Replay shouldn't be used to try and make an imperfect game perfect.

Still waiting for 1 penalty a game to be reviewable.

It works in basketball. It's time.

Yup. It works in hockey as well. Seen many goals taken off the board due to offside penalties that were initially missed.

Whatever they do they need to review the review process because it's taking away from the flow of the game. I've seen way too many reviews that are obvious on the first view and on the scoreboard and they still take 2-3 minutes to make a decision. It's bad enough for fans at home but at least we can change the channel while they're screwing around. Fans at the game are stuck sitting there. You get 5-7 reviews per game and that's an extra 15-20 minutes they are adding. The advertisers love it though.

I mean, I hate the game breaks... but I'd rather have them review things and get it right.
But it does strike me as odd that it can take so much time to review a play. Most plays, I can watch it and determine instantly whether it should be reversed or not.

And I'm not saying that to toot my own horn, but more to point out that Instant Reply is to overturn clear and OBVIOUS mistakes. If it's not indisputable, you go with whatever was the call on the field.

There are only 17 games in a season - get the call right. imo

I'm of the mind that, if they are going to stop the game, they should review the play as if the call on the field never happened. The "clear and obvious" standard is intrinsically vague, and I can't think of any compelling argument for deferring to the call on the field when we all know how difficult the NFL is to officiate in real time. To the extent a play is getting a second look, and given what are often extremely high-quality replay shots with multiple angles, I think the plays should be reviewed without regard for what was called on the field.

I saw that on the broadcast replay. The raiders got lucky a few times in that game.

Eh, I'd say SF got lucky on that play. Defender made a great play to get to the QB to disrupt the pass. Same thing happened to Raiders in OT and became an INT. We were lucky Aiyuk kept his concentration and came down with this one.

Love that Purdy was going for the game winning TD. Considering Gould missed the kick it was clearly the right decision.

No holding called at all in the raiders then all the sudden kittle gets called for pushing a guy with one arm. Something was fishy with the refs yesterday….

With modern technology and all the high-quality camera shots available, I wonder when in the coming years, we'll see more officiating being handled from the booth or remotely from the league office... rather than having referees running around in the field of play.

I meant that they were lucky in the fact that there were a few missed opportunities for deep TD's against that secondary. I do agree with your point though.

Home teams always seem to get favorable calls from what I have observed over the years. But that holding call on Kittle was a straight up wtf were you looking at call.

Yeah it's an interesting question. I think certain calls are easier to officiate from the field in real time and others are best officiated with the benefit of hindsight.

As I was typing my previous post, I was also considering whether any form of transparency during the replay process would be valuable...for example, hearing the discussion between the officials on the field and the "upstairs" officials or a post-review explanation shared with the fans. I don't think transparency would convince the irrational fans who want all the calls to go their way, but at least it could help illuminate the determinative factor(s) in any given decision so fans have that insight.

The obvious answer is something the NFL feels weirdly reluctant to implement: another official that is part of the crew sitting in the booth.

Allow this ref to be able to tell the on-field crew to pick up incorrect or ticky-tacky penalties, just like they already do when the refs conference together.

Also allow this ref to call extremely obvious missed penalties. Nothing ticky-tacky, or even arguably there, but BLATANTLY clear uncalled penalties. Like, a very high standard. Things like the PI in the Saints-Rams NFC CG, a facemask that pulls a guys head around that is somehow missed, etc. Has to be an outrageous missed penalty.

Do this, without coaches needing to ask for replays, and it won't be perfect, but it would go a long way to making the game better.

It's time. The entire viewing audience can see these things within 15 seconds when its replayed. Why can't a sky official?

The Saints were also 13-3 that year, so it's not quite the same as the 6-10 Raiders starting their backup QB.
Now we just need to get the time on the last contest so we can get on with the playoffs and the SF vs ARI thread. I feel bad for Cards fans
