I think we all need to accept the fact that weather isn't going to be great. There's about a 75% chance of rain during the game. That could be light showers or heavy downpour. We'll just have to make do no matter what. Th Niners have played in several rain games and have practiced a lot so they'll be okay. I just hope there isn't a lot of wind. 10-15 mph is okay but if it starts gusting to 25-30 mph then that could be an issue. Ground and pound.
All of the great playoff runs under Montana took place in some games that were played in wind driven torrential downpours.
Games played in these conditions became the team's strength. 49er fans didn't just hope for rain on game day, they prayed for wind and rain whipped mud festas.
The 49ers of that era had the best dammed offensive lines that excelled in these SLOP games. Running backs like Roger Craig and Tom Rathman didn't just hit you, they PUNISHED you. Roger Craig handed out concussions like candy with his high leg kick and upright running conditions. His knees were like pistons on a high-powered, smoke belching diesel engine. Any lineman or linebacker who got whacked by those things was walking in circles by the end of the game.
You have to get out of the mindset that these weather conditions are bad for the 49ers. They're not. Deebo will do his best Deebo. Christian McCaffrey will be anything but Christian. He will be Crusade McCaffrey. Bosa will bullrush his opponent into the Bay.
These are your 49ers. They're badass. Rain is good. Mud is most excellent. Torrential downpours can obscure the pain they will inflict upon any opponent who dares to get in their way.
The 49ers were just toying with teams in the final two games. The real season starts tomorrow. Hope that Mother Nature sends her worst. Because she is our 12th Man.
First of all, not all the Niner playoff games in the 80s were played in downpours and high winds. I know because I was there for every single one that was played at the Stick. We were able to tailgate without getting soaked. Most home games had decent weather. The field was often in bad shape because of poor drainage. Because it was built on landfill the field was always soft and marshy. It was a constant problem for the groundskeepers.
Bad weather doesn't help the more talented team. If anything, it takes away from the team speed and it can take away from the passing game if the winds get to high. The Niners have a good running game and a string defense so they should still be okay. I hope the bad weather doesn't keep the fans away or drive them inside to one of the clubs at the stadium. The players like t see the stands full.
Not sure how true this is, But I recall reading about how , because of " the stick " being built on said landfill, and because it was on or at sea level, that the field was subject to a tidal influence and would become soggier just after high tides…the article went on to say how the Niners front office would sometimes schedule home game kickoff time to match those high tides because they wanted a soggier, ( i.e. slower field ) to play. It went on to say that many of those games would start at strange and unusual times to correspond to that, ( like 12:23 am )….as I said, I'm not sure how valid this story was, but I wouldn't put it past them if true.
