This forum is the craft beer stand on the 2nd level from halftime to midway through the 3rd quarter. I'm VERY guilty of contributing to that jam too when I go to games.

Saturday was the first time any issues were brought to my attention. I was not made aware of any issues during previous game days, so to my knowledge, there were no issues. At least, not that I was aware of. From the comments in this thread, it sounds like there were issues on Friday night. I was not aware of that, though.
Once I was told about the issue on Saturday, the game was already in progress. So my attention was on covering the game, not investigating any issues with the forums. During high-traffic periods, the forums are set to close temporarily until the excessively high traffic (more so any high demand on the server) has subsided for at least five minutes. On Saturday, I noticed that the traffic to the site was insanely high during commercial breaks. It returned to normal during the game itself.
As a precaution, I lowered the server load threshold that causes the forum to shut down, ensuring the resource-hungry forum's impact did not impact other portions of the site. That ensured the other portions of the site were not impacted. Unfortunately, that means no access to the forums during those times. I know other high-traffic sites completely shut down their interactive portions, like forums, during events, only making them available again after the event. I'll try to avoid doing that, though.
Unfortunately, because of the nature of the forums, this procedure is the best course of action for now. Other portions of the site are largely fine because they become static. Their impact is minimal. However, the forum is constantly updating and isn't static content, which makes it the most resource-hungry portion of the site. Caching can only do so much when the data is constantly updating.

Personally I was just messing with for some good hearted fun. I find it amazing how much many of us including myself to some extent aren't capable of watching the games without the forum. Hell I see post from people at the stadiums. Boy have times changed. Thanks for giving us a place to act like we know more than the coaches, players and owners.

I wish I had more time to spend in the forums. Haven't been a regular in many, many years. I'm sure there is a solution. I may look into closing the forums to guests viewers on game days for next season or things like the draft if this is an issue. Again, I'm not sure. This is the first I have heard of it this season, since we moved to a new heavy-duty server in September.
I'm glad you guys enjoy the forums, though. I've fought to keep them around over the past few years.
