There have been many, many years of great offensive units, but to have an equally great defense with so much talent, I can't remember one.
The first thought that I had about a great defense was the year that they had that 7 play defensive stand against the Eagles at Candlestick inside the 2 yard line, but I couldn't remember the whole roster, lol.
No doubt though that this years team ranks among the best ever.
That 2001 team was so much fun to watch. Especially with the late game heroics of Garcia and Owens.
We brought Stubblefield back, and the youth movement with Julian Peterson, Ahmed Plummer, Jason Webster, John Engleberger, and Andre Carter paid off. Of course we still had BY, Derek Smith, Ulbrich, Bronson and Schulters.
I'm on the younger side so this is the era I got really into the Niners so would love a perspective on this because I was only like 12 at the time- that team seemed extremely talented, why didn't they ever go far? I know the Rams and the greatest show on turf was a big obstacle, was that all?

I was never a fan of Jimmy G, I thought his poor decisions and lack of accuracy cost us several games, including a Super Bowl. Trey Lance was clearly not ready. We're finally seeing this offense with someone at the helm who gets the ball out quickly to our many toys... and he just happens to be an excellent playmaker.
The bar has been low for our quarterbacks since Kyle got here and he's not without fault. That's what makes analyzing just how good Purdy is difficult.
the online is healthier and playing much better though

Thanks DOPEMAN, we're getting all this Cowboy hype across the internet. Last time they won anything was 1995. I watch this offense and it is scary good, run, pass, play-action. One thing I noticed about the Boys against the Bucs, their safeties played deep. Against the 49ers crossing patterns they will tear that D apart. The only hope for the Boys is pressure, but Shanahan will exploit that too.

I always thought "MOOCH" held those teams back by being ultra conservative.

The defense wasn't all that. Recall we got buried by Kerry Collins and Amani Toomer in the playoff game, before offense had to bail us. Owens was also a complete nut case and he blew up the team single handed essentially.

We have the type of offense def coord. have nightmares about and keeps them up at night. We can truly beat you running and passing. Overcommit to one and you'll be carved up by the other.
CMC really unlocked this offense and Purdy has taken it to another level.

True. The 49ers defense seems particularly vulnerable to deep shots down the field.

I don't know about that reality is DK is one of the most talented dudes in the NFL. I don't see DAL having that same luck. They attack more with TEs, RBs, etc.

Yeah we were basically a 10-6 team for a couple years. It was right after Young/Rice were gone and looked like we were going to need a complete rebuild. Jeff Garcia came around and we basically pulled a 2022 Seahawks for a couple years until TO destroyed the locker room and forced himself off the team. The team overachieved and never felt like they were going to go deep in the playoffs when the Warner/Faulk Rams were going full speed, the Giants were good, and the Bucs started crushing it. The Bucs absolutely demolished us the year they went to the Super Bowl, like 38-10 or something. The playoff comeback win against the Giants was amazing though.
Cowboys have been fielding some of the most mediocre and boring teams since 1996 yet fans of the other 31 teams have to suffer their over exposure from ESPN year in and year out
most overrated franchise in sports and it's not even close

They probably won't be as good deep. But they are capable. Our secondary needs to play better and worries me a little bit.

Just saw NFL networks commercial preview of this game and whadaya know…it's ALL about the Niners defense, rightfully so, but there's clearly something bigger to be feared on the other side of the ball.
After this weekend this thread will be as relevant as Purdy.

I think I heard somewhere that every team the 49ers played, had lost the following week.
