Hurts averaged 2.4 YPC with a rushing TD against TEN #1 ranked run defense this season. That is the only top 10 run defense he has faced all season. Last season Hurts had 10 carries for 82 yards and 1 TD against our 2021 7th ranked run defense. Our 2022 #2 ranked run degense did give up 8.3 YPC and a rushing TD to Marcus Marriotta. Jarrett Stidham averaged 4.9 YPC against us. Hurts is a level above those guys when it comes to running the ball and can certainly be trouble for our defense. I hope that Demeco will have a solid gameplan to slow Hurts down and try to force him to play more from the pocket.

More numbers for Hurts if anyone cares.

- 165 attempts for 760 yards is 4.6 ypc. (54 avg per game)
- 6 out of 14 games he had 5.0 or more ypc (only twice did he have over 6 ypc) (6 games where he had 3.0 ypc or less)
- 7 out of 14 games where he had more than 50 yards on the ground

^^^ Obviously those numbers by themselves are not super helpful without knowing the outcome of each game and his passing yards per game, etc... but there they are.

Eagles top defensive players ranked by PFF.

7 of their top 10 defensive players rank 28th or lower in run defense.

The run offense that I think that is the closest to ours is DET with their OZ concepts. The eagles battled the Lions in a week 1 matchup. The Lions gained 181 yards on the ground at 6.5 yards per pop and 3 rushing TD's.

Week 12 against the packers, GB put up 33 points and averaged 5.0 YPC and a rushing TD.

Week 6, Ezekiel Elliot averaged 6.2 yards per carry rushing for 81 yards, long of 14 and 1 rushing TD.

In week 18 against the giants, Gary Brightwell 5.5 YPC, Davis Webb 6.8 YPC and Matt Breida 7.0 YPC. They totaled 21 carries for 129 yards with 1 rushing TD.

The commanders had success in week 10 with the IZ and trap game because their two interior defenders are not good at stopping the run and neither is their LB Kyzir White.

DET in week 1 they were gashing them by attacking their CB's on the outside in the run game.

PHI has been vulnerable to both IZ and OZ and Kyle has built this offense to be good at running both. If Kyle calls a good run game and gashes them early, the playaction and bootleg passes will leave holes in that secondary to take advantage of in the pass game.

great research and informative post!

Agree 💯% with both of you!

You need to reach out to Kyle and give him your insight. 😀 Sometimes I feel like us coach couches see the game better

I'm pretty sure they know. They have an analytics department that focuses on statistical research, which I'm sure is similar to DVOA's and Next Gen Stat stuff...

I see some stats suggesting many of your defenders struggle against the run. What do you make of that?

We didn't struggle last week against Saquon or in the two Giants games prior. We didn't struggle against Derek Henry in week 13. We did struggle for a bit when we lost Jordon Davis and when the injuries starting mounting and prior to last week's divisional game; I wasn't sure how healthy we were or if that dominant defense from the earlier part of the season would return. A week ago, I said we would lose to the Niners if we met. And then we absolutely rolled the Giants and that dominant team, on both sides of the ball, was back and looked better than ever. I feel like the advantage is with us. We're healthy again, we're highly focused and unlike last week, your boys have the shorter week and the cross country travel to an environment that is going to be more hostile than anything they have experienced. Purdy has not faced this kind of environment and this level of pressure. Hurts on the other hand is unflappable and has a cool calm that just oozes confidence. I expect a close game and I won't be surprised with any result short of a blowout which is highly unlikely but I'm feeling far better than I did just a few days ago.

Basically if your team is winning and you are with a group of say 5 people and yall stand up and cheer a touchdown and high five, you'll get beers thrown at you. that should be your expectation.

That's a bunch of b******t.

Regarding the environment, i dont think philly is really that bad for opposing teams. I would think that an NFC Champ game in say seattle for example would be a more challenging env than Philly. Philly is a horrible place for opposing fans so the intimidation is more in the stands than on the field. Of course any stadium in an NFC Champ game will be fire on the field. But i dont think Philly is really all that bad. That being said, last year we had it easy with home away from home. haha... But i guess the point im makng is, is philly really that intimidating place for opposing players? i dont really think so. I've been there a couple times wearing red... its rough for the fans.. plus we may have 1 out of 5 fans (20% based on ticket sales data). its gonna be a hell of a good time though!

Did you really just say the giants were dominant?

No, I said we were. Maybe my English after a long day of tiling is a bit off.

I've been to a Niners-eagles game on a Monday Night at the old vet years ago. Guy next to me had a gold Niners jacket on, and he was pelted with ketchup and food all game. Fireworks were being lit in the stands. That was the game Philly decided to put a holding cell in the stadium for rowdy fans until the police arrived. I knew a Packet fan that went to a game, and someone just dumped an entire tray of food on him. I've been to Niners-Giants game in 49er attire, no issues, and just laughed with the giants fans .Same at a Niner-jets game.

Yeah they just aren't good people. I mean they have that culture and rep it so they all continue and live it.

I shouldn't talk though. I usually get into it at Levi's when the other team's fans start getting cocky. So I also suck but I'm not at that level of hate. Haha
One thing I haven't seen brought up too much is the advantage the Niners have in playoff experience. Many veterans have played in championship games before. A decent chunk of the roster are playing in their third nfc championship and have played in a superbowl. Especially on the defense.

I could see the Niners come out more relaxed and poised than a younger less experienced Eagles team.

Purdy or Hurts could implode in their first championship game appearance but I would argue Brock now has more experience than Hurts has had in tight playoff games. Plus he has more veterans around him with big game experience.

Can Hurts come up big when the pressure is on? I like our Rooks chances over Hurts.

Seattle may be the loudest which has much to do with the design of the stadium but Philly fans are louder imo. I'd be surprised if there was a 50-1 ratio of fans, yet alone a 5-1 ratio. You'll be surrounded by green. Hope you have a great time but not so great that your celebrating a Niners win. If you have the time, hit Tony Luke's or Joe's steaks for a cheesesteak.
