Who will be the next 49ers Defensive Coordinator?

Does not apply to assistant/coordinator positions.

It does for coordinator positions now. I believe that a team must interview at least two minority candidates for GM, HC and coordinator positions.

I think they genuinely want to hear out Wilks since his style of defense fits the existing personnel so well.

Me too.

Is that right? oops. okay.
Wilks had the Panthers at the #2 defense in 2021. I wouldn't have a problem with him coming here. I like Fangio a lot, but would he fit this team in all the various ways? Does he see players as family, or subordinates only? Would he run more of a 3-4? Or would it be a hybrid scheme?

Lot of questions regarding continuity if the choice is Fangio. The other aspect is that his scheme is spreading around the league. imo this is not a good thing. The more teams that use his scheme, the more OCs are looking for ways to beat it. When Fangio was here with Harbaugh, he was already doing a lot of Quarters stuff, and that made the 49ers a bit different than others. Now, many teams are doing it. And looking at past history, the more teams that run a certain defensive scheme, the sooner it gets figured out.

It happened to the Tampa2 scheme in the early 2000s. It happened to the "Seattle Cover3" in the 2010s. And now it's Fangio's scheme's turn. Fangio's influence as an advisor to the 49ers in the 2022 offseason was seen in DRyans' coverage schemes this season, but not the front 7. If Fangio comes on, things might change - to something the rest of the league is currently catching on to.
I think it will be Vic Fangio. Fangio has unfinished business here, so close to a ring with Kaep and that great defense in 2013!

We have much better core players on defense so I think his chance at a ring is better here anyway.

That only counts for HC positions I thought.

I think it will come down to Fangio or Wilkes.

They definitely don't have an internal candidate they are serious about. Maybe they do and are just doing their due diligence.

Wilks would be a stud hire imo. He's been a HC and players really loved being around him. I think the scheme stays closer to the same with him as well

I'm very curious about Wilks if we go outside. He had that Panthers team going.

I would prefer Wilks too.

I'm not a fan of Fangio and his 15 yards cushions.

He wasn't with the Panthers in 2021.
