Who will be the next 49ers Defensive Coordinator?

He wasn't with the Panthers in 2021.

Check and mate

game over

Lot of questions regarding continuity if the choice is Fangio. The other aspect is that his scheme is spreading around the league. imo this is not a good thing. The more teams that use his scheme, the more OCs are looking for ways to beat it. When Fangio was here with Harbaugh, he was already doing a lot of Quarters stuff, and that made the 49ers a bit different than others. Now, many teams are doing it. And looking at past history, the more teams that run a certain defensive scheme, the sooner it gets figured out.

It happened to the Tampa2 scheme in the early 2000s. It happened to the "Seattle Cover3" in the 2010s. And now it's Fangio's scheme's turn. Fangio's influence as an advisor to the 49ers in the 2022 offseason was seen in DRyans' coverage schemes this season, but not the front 7. If Fangio comes on, things might change - to something the rest of the league is currently catching on to.

This is what gives me pause with Fangio. I love Lord Fangio, but it seems like everyone and their mom is playing quarters/cover 6/gap and a half defense. Like thl said, we've seen what happens when these systems spread across the league.

I agree with both of you. Fangio is a good coach but Kyle likes to Zig when the rest of the league Zags.

Hopefully we don't lose too many coaches to Houston :/

.
This may be blasphemous in here, but who exactly has Kocurek developed? Bosa doesn't count imo because it was a given he would be a success in the NFL. Solomon Thomas - fail. Javon Kinlaw - fail. Ebukam was believed to have untapped potential but he's been more of the same like he was in LA, a solid starter who doesn't get more then 4 sacks a year. Only one that comes to mind is Arden Key. Although he is a rookie, you would have liked to see Drake Jackson get more and more playing time as the season went on but instead he was inactive during the playoffs. Starting to think we kind of overrate this guy in here.

He had a top 10 defense in 2021.

Interviewing Wilks satisfies the Rooney Rule

That only counts for HC positions I thought.

Chris Harris is also black.

I think it will come down to Fangio or Wilkes.

Chris Harris must be someone they really like to even give an interview. Wilks and Fangio dwarfs him in terms of experience by a lot.

I'm wondering if they're really interviewing him as a potential staff member of Fangio or Wilks rather than as DC.

He got the most out of Kerry Hyder, some journeyman that ended up with 8+ sacks and got a multiyear. He got the most out of Arden Key after he was looking busty. DJ Jones developed well as a day3 pick. He is failing with Kinlaw after pounding the table for him, although Kinlaw's injuries won't allow him to practice so there's that. Ebukam was looking improved towards the end of 2021, then for some reason regressed in 2022. Not fair to put Solomon's failure on Kocurek.
I really like what Wilks did w/Panthers.

I think they genuinely want to hear out Wilks since his style of defense fits the existing personnel so well.

Me too.

I'm very curious about Wilks if we go outside. He had that Panthers team going.

Does not apply to assistant/coordinator positions.

It does for coordinator positions now. I believe that a team must interview at least two minority candidates for GM, HC and coordinator positions.

Is that right? oops. okay.

The Commanders defensive backs were pretty good this season and they play in a 4-3. I like this Chris Harris idea.

He was on Anthony Lynn's staff with the Chargers and has had a few DC interviews already.

Oh so this is not Chris Harris, the slot corner?
Any chance we could poach Jeff Ulbrich from the Jets?
