Thats the positive for Vic. I Would want a defense designed very much like the Eagles defense. Very strong DLine and Defensive backs, and a good to great Linebacking Corps. That defensive formula has won the 49ers a lot of Superbowls. Therefore a defensive back minded HC would be my choice. Vic would be my number two if we couldn't get the best young up and comming defensive backs coach in the NFL as the DC.

The younger up-and-coming candidates will continue to use the 49ers as a stepping
stone, as long as the organisation has above-average talent on the defence

So? Vic could retire in like a yr or two all the same. He's like 65 or something. I like having the younger/hungrier coaches who want to advance (only do they by being good at your current job). I feel like they can relate to their players better and are more willing to adapt.

I'm fine with Vic, but I'm more than fine if they go somewhere else all the same.

TBH NY, I'm torn!
I agree with your thought process, as the NFL gets younger by the year. So bringing in the talented, and hungrier up-and-coming
guys make sense. Yet aside from receiving the comp picks, it's tiring seeing the revolving door of coaches that's become the
49ers dilemma. Such is the price of success I guess

Because not only do our coaches leave, but they also have a tendency to poach other assistants, and players from the squad as well.
So although I understand it, doesn't mean I have to like it

Couldn't help but notice after he was made interim HC the Panthers seemed to be in a higher gear. Having that experience and his year as HC in 'Zona would seem to bode well for him. He's a tough guy, and may well bring more toughness/stoutness to our defense. Good as they were, there were some lapses. Anyway, he's the guy I feel's best suited for our DC.

You've hit on some out of the box thinking in the past, and I also like a defensive back minded coach - and I also like Steve Wilks for that reason.

Linebackers generally are run stoppers and an alternative way to stop the run is simply play keep away football. 49ers can do that now with a super accurate passer in Purdy who can convert third downs with the pass and a strong run game to convert third and short and a mobile QB that can change up those 3rd and shorts situations.

Steve Wilks would be my choice, or a coach with a similar background but possibly younger and from a good defensive back philosophy or defensive scheme or coached under one of the better defensive minded coaches.

Yeah, at least we don't have to worry about Fangio leaving, he's probably just content being a DC, now.

Yeah, no leaving, but no compensatory 3rd round picks either.

I'm open to Wilks being the hire. I believe his roots trace back to Lovie Smith/Monte Kiffin. Some of our scheme does as well. I am confident we could blend what we do with some of he's done going forward.

Its going to be a smorgasbord of defensive philosophies and techniques, for sure going forward into 2023. The new offenses are so pass heavy, you have to go 4-2-5 as your base defenses now in a lot of games. The new nickel could be 2-3-6 the new dime could be 2-2-7

• Chris Harris - Think Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans with this hire … however, the 3rd time isn't guaranteed to be the charm 🤔

• Ejiro Evero - Highly respected, and sought after - and, therein lies the problem. With the talent currently assembled, any success
will probably find the 49ers looking to replace him within two seasons

• Kris Kocurek - I don't even understand why he made this list - as he's stated in the past, he's happy in his current role

• Corey Undlin - Although his previous tenure at the DC position didn't fair well, I don't have much of a feel for him taking over for DeMeco

I'm guessing they will interview a couple other guys. On that list I like Wilks, Evero and Vic. There's a couple others within the league I like as well….

-Kris Richard-CO-DC in New Orleans
-Eric Washington-senior defensive assistant/DL coach Buffalo
-Sean Desai-associated HC in Seattle
-Raheem Morris-DC in LAR (could be let go).
-Nick Rallis-LBer coach Philly
-Joe Whitt Jr-DB coach in Dallas.

Beyond Raheem Morris, I'm checking your list now …

Aging? Isn't most of our defense young and have all of our key pieces locked up expect Bosa?

As long as you have the head guy in there (kyle) gotta let him continue to develop and find guys. He's got relationships all over the league and dudes in house. I also don't expect every guy that leaves will be a head coach as long as kyle, much like Bill he can bring back his dudes.

it's a double edge sword, it means everyone around the league wants a piece of our organization (which means we're doing something great), but like you said it's blows seeing guys leave.

NFL teams are going to poach our coaches whether we have a HC capable DC/OC or not. I believe it was a losing season and we still lost Saleh and a bunch of other coaches. Slowik and Undline are already in the poaching cross hairs of other teams. Unfortunately I don't think we get compensatory picks for getting position players to the assistant coach level - only at the HC/GM level.

We hire Fangio yet?

Interesting set of possible candidates from your listing. There are a few I like based on what I read

I like Sean Desai a lot, such an interesting background and he's well regarded among his peers. Reminds me of a non-d******d version of Matt Patricia, a really smart guy that is actually likable and someone that players can relate to.
