They draft 4-5th round prospects most years in round 3. When was the last time we were excited about our 3rd round selection. Danny Gray and Warner are then only picks I didn't hate on draft day tbh.

Seriously, how many of us know how good any of these coaches are? I have no idea which assistants are capable of being a good DC. Unless they hire a former DC that has a good track record it's anyone's guess.

Sadly drafting in rounds 1-3 is pretty easy. Plenty of experts have a consensus top 100. We typically draft outside of it in every round except #1

Thats the positive for Vic. I Would want a defense designed very much like the Eagles defense. Very strong DLine and Defensive backs, and a good to great Linebacking Corps. That defensive formula has won the 49ers a lot of Superbowls. Therefore a defensive back minded HC would be my choice. Vic would be my number two if we couldn't get the best young up and comming defensive backs coach in the NFL as the DC.
The thing I love about Fangio is his system. Like with Kyle, once he has it fully implemented, guys can step in and play well. Good eye for talent for his systems too. There was one year everyone on defense was dropping like flies and he was still able to get a top 5 defense out of that group.

The point is that you can make an agument that disrupting the coaching staff every couple of years isn't really worth it for two late 3rd round picks that this team has good historical odds of blowing anyways.

I mean there's nothing we can do about that. We have a good coaching staff that can develop.
I'll take 3rd rd comps picks all day and not complain about what's happened in the past.
