I saw that and man, you have to be pretty confident to do that. I think the guy played soccer so it wasn't totally no experience but still really impressive lol

The fact they wasted a 3rd round pick on this guy is what irritates most. Waste of a draft pick compounded by the fact he will have such a long leash based solely on his draft status makes me miserable.

I know lol. Never draft a kicker period. There's a bunch of good un-drafted free agent kickers every year after the draft and Moody wasn't getting drafted period if Kyle didn't pick him lol it's crazy wasting a high pick like that on a kicker

Lol, some of you guys still being obsessed with him being a 3rd round pick and waiting to criticize him at every turn kill me.
I mean, I get it in one sense. Draft picks are in short supply. Some years more than others and some years especially after trading a number of them to get Trey Lance. More on that in a bit. Yes, generally they're better used to fill in holes and depth on the roster. Yes, you can find a perfectly good kicker without drafting one. That doesn't mean that you will. There are still plenty of kickers who are undrafted out of college and invited to try out off their couch who still don't make the team. We thought that we could find easily find a better quarterback than Jimmy and gave up a bunch of draft capital for Trey and that didn't work. You can argue why it didn't work, and yes injuries played a part. But you still had a healthy Trey Lance who had been in the offense for 2 years who couldn't beat out a guy who was considered a bust with no experience in it coming in, Sam Darnold. Yes there was some play rust in all likelihood coming off ankle surgery. He still knew the offense. Kyle went with Brandon Allen over Dobbs as the backup this year, likely because Allen had more experience in the offense since Dobbs seemed to outplay him in preseason action and actually has probably more relevant NFL experience. The Trey Lance move was worse for the team and the draft than the Jake Moody move so thank God for Brock Purdy. People did the same griping over Wishnowsky like every single year and no they haven't been happy with him this year, though he still has his 3rd highest Y/P (but lowest net). But they were generally satisfied with him last year.
Chances are the staff and front office know what they're doing here. Draft status isn't everything. Yes it matters. No, unless Lynch is lying, which there's no reason to assume that, Moody wasn't going to go undrafted if we hadn't picked him. He was going to get drafted maybe in the next round.
Teams do decide they've seen enough of a kicker they drafted fairly early on sometimes, after one year or even within the year. Roberto Aguayo was supposed to be an all everything kicker and Tampa Bay decided he wasn't after his rooke season and he was done. Anders Carlson, whom we obviously had, was drafted in the 6th round last year and Green Bay decided they had seen enough. His brother, Daniel Carlson, was let go by Minnesota after going 1-4 his rookie year, hit less than 75% of his attempts his second full year, and rebounded to be a 2 time All Pro place kicker. Sebastian Janikowski was picked in the first round by the Raiders, and yeah they're the Raiders and he was hardly automatic. Was still their kicker for 17 years.
Moody has talent. It was evident at Michigan and it is evident to Kyle and John Lynch. If they decide he all of a sudden is a liability, they aren't likely to keep him around any more than Tampa Bay did Aguayo or the respective teams did the Carlson brothers. We'll see how it plays out. Moody was better than all of those guys his rookie year and Gould had two years here with a lower success rate than Moody last year and one year lower than what Moody has right now. Obviously he had a track record and obviously was money in the postseason.

Nice short story. My version is shorter. Cut him and move on. Trey Lance and Moody will be case studies for what not to do in the draft.

I would have been fine with one more year of Gould.
Don't think Gould can hit many 50+s anymore but a game winner in the snow I trust him all day.

Obviously they should. Maybe we can convince the Ravens to cut Justin Tucker and we'll sign him and his worse than Jake Moody performance.

This team wasted first-round picks in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and their third-round pick in 2022 on one player, TREY LANCE.
A third round miss on a kicker doesn't even make page one on the Shanahan f**kups List.

Moodys production is indefensible. Absolutely horrific and you have to get rid of him after this year. Don't care that it's only year two. He's the worst kicker statistically in the NFL. No excuses.

Wow - you weren't joking. He's last in FG percentage at 76%. With this said he's automatic from 20-39 and with xps, 30 for 30. But from 40+ it's flip a coin (54%) which is not an NFL caliber kicker.
