It doesn't matter how much potential he has when there's probably 5+ kickers on the street who can hit 50+ yarders as well.

What were the 49ers thinking when they drafted a kicker in the 3rd round?

Chad Ryland was drafted in the 4th. Granted he had a bad year in NE in 2023 but he's been lights out in 2024 for AZ.
He's under contract so I'm willing to give him the offseason to figure it out especially if we do bring in a new ST coach but they definitely have to bring in another guy or two that legitimately can take the job and have a complete open competition because as it stand right now he's no better than any of the guys that can be hand off the street.

It's a bummer but getting hard to defend, I like him and think he has all the talent but he can't get past the mental part it seems

Isn't there dimensions of the college ball different as well ? He had Harbaugh pumping him up with confidence. In the nfl he's on his own, and has Taybor Pepper

The college ball is shaped a little diffrent. Slightly longer compared to the NFL ball and a little slimmer. The differences are minimal. Shouldn't make a difference in kicking. It would affect the QB's ability to grip the ball more than it would the kicker.

I'm not. His blocked XP potentially cost us the SB...he's been awful this year and he's pissing off teammates. It's time to go, if this team expects to be serious next off season it needs to get a veteran kicker.

He's 100% on extra points. Several kickers have outright missed on the point after this season. He's also 100% on kicks inside 40 yards. It's the longer ones where he's missing and not because of his lack of leg strength. Hs accuracy just falls off when he has to kick anything over 40 yards. That seems like something that could be corrected in the off season. Remeber he made to over 50 in the SB last year so we know he's capable.
The problem with Moody has all to do with the fact that he is a 3rd round kicker. If he was a seventh rounder or FA nobody would b***h as much. If you are a 3rd round kicker you are expected to be better. Far or not. A lot of this lies on the front office for going brain dead and picking a kicker anywhere before the 5th round.
Too much drama with this guy , I don't wanna worry about a kicker doing his job , Carlson did better when he was hurt, cut him in the offseason
A lot of his successfully converted FGs are juuuuust inside the uprights.

When the coin flips, those near misses will be...misses.

It's just going to continue.

XPs and that superbowl FG are just bandaids on a broken ankle.

Especially for a head coach who prefers to settle for the FG.
Kickers can be fickle creatures. I wonder how much effect having a new holder and missing extended time had an effect. Truth is he was doing petty good before the injury

He wasn't 100% on XPs in the Superbowl that we lost in OT.

He's more trouble than he's worth and he's clearly pissing off the HC, I don't expect him to make it another offseason.

Any scrub can kick 100% inside 40 yards.
They need to bring in a kicker for legit competition at least

he was never doing good. this is a myth. his first preseason he was shanking all over the place and he had this look on his face like he wet the bed. he's just not confident at all. he stopped during his last kick during his motion, then restarted.
