Jake Moody-K-Michigan 3rd Round 2023 Draft

Good pick if he becomes our great kicker for a long time. People act like they haven't watched field goals win or lose games. Who cares if it's a third rounder, he'll probably contribute more than any player we would've picked in his place.

Just like every other position, no guarantee a highly regarded kicker is going to be successful. Even the good ones often bounce around before finding their home. There's some recency bias with Mcpherson and CadeYork in our minds, but looking back through the years there are plenty of failures. These guys had amazing college careers, Lou Groza finalists, alot of times the first special teams player off the board, and it's quite common to be cut in camp or after one bad game

2020 draft, Patriots select Justin Rohrwasser at pick 159. Is cut in training camp. Pats draft kicker again in 2023.
2019 draft, Bucs select Matt Gay at 145. NFL talent, but cut after 1 year and now bouncing around the league.
2019 draft, Browns select Austin Seibert at pick 170. Cut after a year. Free agent right now if you want him. Browns draft kicker again in 2022.
2018 draft, Daniel Carlson at 167 by the Vikings. Released after 2 games. Turned into a nice kicker but not for the team that drafted him.
2017 draft, Jake Elliot taken at 153 by the Bengals. Cut in training camp. Eagles pick him up and turns into a good kicker but not for his original team.
2016 draft, Bucs take Aguayo at 59. Third most accurate kicker in NCAA history, never missed a extra point in college. Cut after one year.
2013 draft, Dolphins take Caleb Sturgis at 166. Cut after 2 seasons.
2013 draft, Bills take Dustin Hopkins at 177. Groin pull rookie year, gets cut after the season. Bounces around after that.
2012 draft, Texans take Randy Bullock at 161. Cut after 3 years. NFL talent but bouncing around the league.
2011 draft, Eagles select Alex Henery at 120. Had 2 good years before struggling and being cut.
2008 draft, Taylor Melhaff is first kicker off the board at 178. Cut in training camp.
2007 draft, Justin Medlock is first kicker off at 160 to the Chiefs. Cut after a bad preseason game.
2007 draft, Nick Folk is taken at 178 by the Cowboys. decent career, but released by Cowboys after 3 seasons and bounced around the league.
2005 draft, Mike Nugent is taken at 47 by the Jets. Couple decent years before getting cut and having more productive seasons with the Bengals with 6 other teams mixed in there.
2002 draft, 49ers select Jeff Chandler at 102. Released after one season...
Anyone that doesn't think having a reliable kicker from 50 yards on in isn't watching much football. They're often the top scorer on the team. Even extra points aren't that easy anymore since they moved them back. Some feel that a 3rd round pick is too high and it may be during most years. This wasn't a typical year that was loaded with talent. By the 3rd round, it was pretty much a crapshoot. Better to take a kicker that will help the team instead of a guy that might not even make the team.

over the last two seasons, Moody has made 97.6% of his kicks inside 49 yards, including extra points. He's only missed one kick shy of 40 yards and 3 kicks shy of 49 yards. so impressive because he played for harbaugh, a known psychopath and habitual field goal kicker. Lol

It's just bad picking a kicker no matter who we beat to it. They are a dime a dozen.

Akers, Dawson and Gould were all undrafted.

Guys like Vinateri, Tucker undrafted.

When all the best kickers are undrafted, it almost automatically makes the pick unjustifiable unless this dude is going to be the best kicker of all time

Trey Sermon was a 3rd.. Moody a comp 3rd, which is essentially a 4th, and didn't Belichick go kicker right after us

he just needs to be a quality NFL starter, the odds of getting a quality nfl starter in the 3rd round are low
Anyone who doesnt like the pick doesnt know ball.

Not to mention the Pats took a K about 15 picks later. If they wanted Moody, that's where they had to take him. Maybe younger fans don't know what it is like to go through a season with a bad kicker…

Got one fan who picked a username after the worst kicker in 9ers history. Boggles the mind.

Oh that guy lol.
The first comment in this video predicted Moody to the 49ers one month ago.

Yeah if he's kicking game winners and doing great and what not there will be no complaints.

I'd still feel like we could've got a guy that can kick it through the uprights without using a draft pick, but no complaints.

To me it's just not worth it. If he ends up good then it's whatever though

He looks very good to me. Great pick.

He kicks FG's and wins games.

LMAO the harbaugh voice over at the end was perfect.
some of the failures of kickers taken somewhat early in the draft. All hyped up, great college careers, some Lou Groza finalists. Some of them even turned out pretty good, but just not for the team that drafted them. Easy to get impatient and move on from a guy during a bad streak. Point being, kickers just like any other position can and will fail and bust out. Moody is no lock to even win the job. Zane was a drafted kicker as well, Lou Groza winner, unanimous All American, all time Pac 12 points leader, 5th on the NCAA all time points list. 81% make percentage for his career. If it werent for some quad injuries, hes probably have a steady job.
