Right? This guy needs to sign with the Jets already
I bet Harbs would have some interest.
Bro was clutch under Mr. khaki pants.
He'll miraculously become an all-pro kicker if we trade him there

As long as we're serious about an actual kicking competition then let's do it.
I doubt Droopy will be able to win it but if he does then let's hope he puts last year behind him and the injury was an actual issue. God help him if he misses a critical kick tho….

I definitely think the injury had a lot to do with it. A high ankle sprain is really bad. Especially for a kicker. He was rushed back and not fully healthy. Now they have come to terms with this. He definitely missed way more AFTER the high ankle sprain. So it's not like he never missed without it. But the misses went up. Lets be honest here. That said he does concern me some. He doesn't strike me as the most clutch. But a guy who can hit the 59 yarder in the College Football Playoff doesn't suddenly forget how to play. I think he's in his own head too much and the high ankle sprain both. He needs to calm down, get back to mechanics and just kick it. I believe he can physically do it. It's mental with some combination of the high ankle sprain effecting him. He can be in the competition and may win it and even turn out. But I'd keep a close eye on him at this point too.

Completely puzzling why they arent washing hands of this guy. This is the longest leash I've seen a struggling kicker have in a long while.
And what is the point ?

See how he does in camp and pre season. No reason to cut him now. They may bring in competition. You roster starts much bigger. Then cut down to 53.

If they rushed him back and his issues were due to injury that's on them. Doesn't hurt to have a competition. Worst best case is he wins it and at least we know we didn't just hand him the job.

Moody needs a fresh start. Here he is always going to be under intense scrutiny due to draft status and poor prior performance. He's proven to be extremely unreliable in clutch situations. He missed a FG against the Packers, a FG against the Lions and had the PAT blocked in the SB (it was partly his fault as the trajectory on that kick was too low). Even prior to the injury this past year he missed the only clutch kick he was asked: the one to seal the game @ LAR. He also missed the game winner vs Cleveland.
He's obviously a talented kicker with a great leg but that isn't a trait that is hard to find in a street free agent. Also his ability to kick it out of the end zone is less important since they keep moving the touchback further out.

Situations can always get worse..
I would like to see who his replacement could be.. there's a decent pool of FA candidates but i'm not sure they are worth to spend twice or 3 times as much and get the same production as Moody
or do we just gamble on an unknown

Bring in competition, if they both do good, trade Jake.

From all accounts during the past he was good enough in practice to rush him back.
What makes anyone think they can properly evaluate him in competition?
Yeah, okay I get it. Go through the motions but please move him along.
His mechanics and demeaner said it all. Whether that is from poor coaching or just a slump, it will likely end in tears on this team.

The teams stance on Moody is one of the few times I'd be very critical of Shanahan and Lynch for personnel decisions. IMO Moody has never instilled confidence and is likely cooked after the horrible end of the season. He costs us wins, potentially including the most important game in any season.
