All signs point to us cutting him, but he can come back at a discount.

Not sure, but that's their plan as per JL.

True why would we cut him and still have all that cap hit. It makes more sense to keep him. We are not saving all that much.

We already saved $17M by redoing his deal, only his prorated portion will count as dead money for 2025, so $7.355M for 2025, and $17.485M in 2026, plus they need to June 1 him or his 2025 & 2026 base salaries become fully GTD on the 2nd day of the new league year.

It says near the bottom 49ers will eat 5m in dead money but save 15m in 2026. It also states what you stated in your post as well.
"Hargrave is in a similar boat. If released this upcoming summer, at age 32, the Niners would eat around $5 million in dead money but turn around and save $15 million in 2026."
I'm just going to assume we're saving more than if we didn't do this.

Yes they'll save significant money in 2026 since he has a $29.855M cap hit in 2026, so they save $12.37M in 2026 by doing a post June 1 cut, as I said also his base salaries become fully GTD in 2025 & 2026 if on roster on the 2nd day of the new league year at end of the day, which would be 1pm PST/4pm EST, since anything done after that doesn't become official until the next business day.

Seriously,,, thanks AB I guess it does make sense to cut him. We do save a lot for what he does in the middle.

Would like to keep him 1 more year cause we need help on the DL but 32 and just tore his Tricep that's a career altering injury at that position. We need help at both Edge and DT and there isn't anything on the market crazy cause it seems like we've really tried shoring up the DL since 2019. Trading Buckner still haunts us…

Niners need two 325+ pound monsters to help vs. the run. LB's need help and the bigger DT's can keep the blockers off them. Huge flaw in the SF defense.

They can always designate him Post June 1 cut, and if he doesn't get what he's looking for, they can sign him to a 1yr deal, worth like $5M, worth up to $10M with incentives, I'd love to keep Hargrave, but just need the cap room going forward for guys like Jauan, Warner, Kittle, & of course Brock.

Let's be honest, Lynch has wasted so much money on his big free-agent moves in his career with us. Overall pathetic to be honest.

And still outperforms 90% of the league. The big free agent signings haven't paned out for the most part and it's why I prefer they more or less stay out of it. Focus on the draft and undervalued pro guys if you can find them (the Arden Keys and Charles Omenihu's).
