Isn't there a rule where you can cut up to two players before June 1st but declare them post-June 1st cuts? (We couldn't do this with Deebo because it was a trade)

Exactly. Apparently they are cutting him next week. Which i believe means they will eat his dead cap hit all this year instead of spreading it out if her were cut after June 1. Are we just being friendly to Hargrave by cutting him next week?

Hope so and that would make sense.

I haven't heard of that, but that would be cool.

Yes, in the NFL, teams are allowed to designate up to two players as "post-June 1st cuts" which means they can release those players before June 1st, but the salary cap implications of the cut will only take effect after June 1st, allowing teams to spread out the cap hit over two seasons; essentially, giving them more immediate cap space to sign other players before the league year officially starts.

Key points about the post-June 1st designation:

  • Limit of two players: Each team can only use this designation on two players per season.

Cap benefit: By designating a player as a post-June 1st cut, the team can release them early in the offseason but won't have the full cap hit count against them until after June 1st.

  • Impact on player: While the player can still sign with another team, they may miss out on any roster bonuses or workout pay that would be due before June 1st.

That's all you can do at this point. Take the hit and move on

I heard that the Eagles prefer to sign players with most of the money up front. That way they don't have all that dead cap money when they want to release a player. It seems to make more sense than retructuring constantly and then eventually having that deferred money hanging over your head like a guillotine.

is it really hanging over our heads, we're not close to being in cap hell. we won't be next year and even further from it in 2026

You restructure players worth keeping. Only injuries can make restructuring look bad

It does catch up to you eventually. You either have to pay the money or make tough cuts to personnel.

That's not true at all. See Deebo. They wouldn't have this dead cap hit if they didn't restructure
