For sure he is. He ran a 4.39 40 at his pro day

This. He did play over 500 snaps on defense too and 60 on ST.
The one thing about DBs that you never know is how they are going to fit in until we see them play as a unit. Playing zone defense requires discipline and cohesiveness. Individual talent is fine but that's more important in a man to man defense.
Played some RB, ran a 4.39, might be useful in ST kick/punt return

Is he going to be the primary backup at S? I wouldn't mind an experienced vet at backup safety to add to the mix. George Odum is a STer imo.

But he is an experienced vet... will be a 4th year vet and 10 game starter

Odum will be a 6th year vet also with 10 games starter.

I think we need a rookie IMO.
Panthers were trying to retain him but he likes Wilks speaks some volume on his value and the kind of character we've hired for our DC

10 game starter isn't very experienced imo, even though they've been in the NFL for many years. I'd prefer playing time experience at safety where communication and reads are important regarding getting everybody in the right spot before the ball is snapped.
Guy seems to be a Jack of all trades and classy individual. Like the signing

I hear ya THL but I'm hoping we use one of our 3rds on a FS this draft, should be some good options available at that pick. We need a young guy who can step in for Gibson after this year. If we take a safety then that would give us 5 safety's when we usually only keep 4 on the roster if I'm not mistaken. Hartsfield isn't a lock to make the team from a contract standpoint but more of a safety net/solid backup if we don't end up drafting one for the future.

No argument there. A young prospect at safety is definitely needed. Tarvarius Moore never panned out, and if Hartsfield is just a depth player, then we need some new blood. My desire for an experienced vet is short term in case Gipson loses two steps over the offseason instead of one (he'll be 33).

I wouldn't mind drafting a good tackler.
given up no catches as a 49er, I like it so far.
Am I the only one wondering why we can't have nice things in the defensive backfield? Ward was a fantastic acquisition, but he really doesn't scare any offense. And while the D line should take priority, you'd think we could have at least stumbled our way into a shut down corner at least once since 1994. I'm not suggesting we spend a ton of money on one, but why haven't we been able to draft any for so long? They can sometimes be found in later rounds like Sherman and Norman, but we seem to be content to just sign them after their prime. Long list there.

My only guess, like OL, they believe prioritizing elsewhere (DL/LB), that'll be enough to make life easy on the secondary. They believe they can get by with a little less talent. And to your point, they haven't picked and developed a higher end CB. They've had to buy one instead.

I can certainly understand their philosophy but in today's game, you've gotta pass protect with the best of them and defend the pass at a high level too.

That said, if dudes like Banks, Burford, McKivitz, Lenoir, Ambry, Womack. etc. take off and start playing at the higher end of the league, look out!
