The NFL made a rule change that allows trams to sign free agents from other teams without losing a compensatory pick. Under the old rules if you lost 5 players and signed 4 then you could end up with only 1 compensatory pick. Now you would get 4. It still matters on how good the player is but teams will end up with more picks.
As much as i like the comp picks they need to do away with them. They are rewarding teams who lose their players and not sign anyone else.
- Eliminate comp picks
- Expand draft to at least 12 rounds
- Draft lottery for first 10 picks like the NBA has (somewhat eliminates the whole tanking fiasco)
- Stop the stupid rule where only 46 guys dress for game days. Whole team should be available plus your practice squad
Probably wrong thread but i couldnt stop typing
They used to have 12 rounds but hey changed it when the league expanded. They concluded that those 5 extra rounds were a waste of time and went to the UDFA system. Teams that lose players usually do so because they can't afford to pay a premium price and stay under the cap. The other reason is because they have players stacked at a position without a lot of openings so the players leave to try and find a starting job somewhere.
The best solution would be to raise the cap high enough that teams can afford to keep their payers. They could also do what the NBA does and allow teams to exceed the cap but pay a luxury tax. That's one good way to find out which owners are really in it to win it. These owners are all billionaires so it's not like they can't afford to pay that tax.
