Joey Fisher will be our starting right tackle when the season starts.

Okay I like that we signed him but let's pump the brakes here. His entire college career he went up against guys who played football as a fun little extracurricular activity.

LOL so we have our new webzone favorite. Last season it was Jason Poe. He was going to be our starting Center. Now everyone has tossed Poe aside even though he was last season UDFA crush. I personally am excited to see Poe this off season.

I'm still hoping Poe makes the team. That is another draft pick saved for a high round offensive lineman. I still think he'd be a great Center or Guard with his athleticism and strength. As for Joey Fisher, wow, his measurables are off the charts. We got him. Now Foerster and Kyle has to get him up to speed and make the 53. That will be another draft pick saved for another position. I really do think that if you have the kind of defensive line we have that can dominate other quality NFL offensive lines, they are a great way to train up and sharpen or filter out these free agent and undrafted raw guys for the team. Imagine a young Joey Fisher, and he is able play against Bosa or Hargrave in practice, how much faster his development will be.

When 32 teams all pass on a player, there is always some reason. Maybe it's practice issues. Could be injuries. Maybe he's not a good blocker. Whatever there has to be a reason other than where he played. Lot's of players get drafted from smaller, more obscure schools than Marshall. I seem to remember a pretty good receiver from there that was also a transfer from a Florida school. Randy something wasn't it?

Neither Jake Brendel nor Kerry Hyder were UDFA rookies for the 49ers
Yeah, I know, doesn't change the fact that they were UDFAs and are now starters in the NFL. T

UDFAs make up about 40% of NFL rosters. That's pretty amazing when you think about how much time teams spend evaluating players before the draft. That shows how many players are buried deep on the roster for some college behind highly rated 4 or 5 star players. They never get a real chance to play until maybe their senior year. They may also be stuck in a system that doesn't allow them to show what they can do. That's one thing that the transfer portal may change.

That's way more than I would have thought. Lots of missed talent on draft day.

I heard Cowherd mention that 40% on his show and thought it sounded high. I checked it out and it's pretty much spot on. The number varies slightly from one season to the next but it's a reflection of how many draft picks are busts or get injured. The roster needs to be filled out some way so the UDFAs come to the rescue.

The total number of NFL players is 1696 (53 man roster). There just aren't enough players drafted to fill all those spots even if every player made the team. Roster turnover is too great from injuries, retirement and cuts. The really amazing part for me is how many UDFAs become really good players. Especially RBs and WRs.

Only other knock I can find is he did lose 3 fumbles last year. Jeff Wilson had that problem too.
The draft is also a snapshot of a person in their early twenties, looking at how they've performed since their late teens. Of course you can tell a a lot from that, but many people go through quite a transformation in their mid-twenties. Unfocussed people become focused, people's motivation can turn around, aspects of the game can be grasped and mastered; I'm not really surprised that some UDFA's turn out well in the NFL. It's probably something that will always defy analysis somewhat.
