INT rate of top three 49ers' QBs at training camp...
— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) August 11, 2023
Brock Purdy: 4.5%
Trey Lance: 2.1%
Sam Darnold: 1.1%
Purdy in the regular season last year was 2.4%. SF would like to keep that rate at 2% or lower, but Purdy was also exceptionally efficient even at 2.4%.
They'll obviously…
Darnold lol showing how taking care of the football, is done
That or he's scared s**tless to throw it and keeps dumping it off. Lol
I think tank, he knows he has a rep for turning it over, so it is a point of emphasis, he may be working to keep those down more than anything. So you may be correct. But progress is progress, that seems like his weak spot and he's working at it.
Honest question man, do you read camp reports or just what's posted here?
Several guys talked about how few aggressive throws Sam has attempted in camp. Even the Raiders reporters noted it during these two practices.
Less turnovers is great of course but if you're just playing captain checkdown and you've been called "greatest thrower of the football"…feels like you're not using your abilities as well as you could.
I've said it before and I'll say it again here: there is such a thing as throwing too few interceptions, because it means you're not taking enough chances. 2 TDs and 0 INTs is great. But 3 TDs and 1 INT is better than 1 TD and 0 INT except in games where your run game utterly dominates.
Even passer rating agrees:
30-40, 3oo yards, 1 TD, 0 INT: 104.2
30-40, 3oo yards, 3 TD, 1 INT:110.4.
And while passer rating isn't exactly a measure of QB performance alone, it IS a pretty good measure of team passing game performance, and you are probably winning more games with the latter stats than the former. That's part of why the 96 Packers won the Super Bowl and we didn't (Young 4.4 TD%, 1.9 INT% [league leading]; Favre 7.2 TD%, 2.4 INT%). And it's why the 2001 Ram got there and we didn't (Garcia, 6.3 TD%, 2.4 INT%; Warner, 6.6 TD%, 4.0 INT%). Ask Aaron Rodgers how not throwing interceptions is going for him, with his one ring — incidentally the one year they won a Super Bowl his INT% was the second highest it has been since then.

This is how Brock made the team over Sudfeld and his $2m guaranteed. While he was only getting maybe 3 reps a day, Kyle said most people would be conservative and careful with the ball. Not Brock. He let it rip.

I mean, this is the relevant point. Purdy was a long shot to make the cut when Sudfield, Lance and Jimmy G were all on guaranteed or potential money (we ended up paying Sudfield £1M).
Brock made this happen initially with his performances in pre-season.
Lance really needs to do similar.
I'm discouraged, but not panicky after one disappointing showing. He really needs to find his mojo though. I'm feeling like the next few weeks are pretty crucial for him, and that its not just about talent, but (on-field) personality at this point.

What's funny is that I agree with Grant Cohen on the play calling Lance had on Sunday, we typically would run and pick up a couple of yards and build momentum but it was like he was showcasing Lance as trade bait, I maybe wrong but it was suspect on the pass to run ratio.

Or maybe Kyle just wanted to see how Trey responded in a high pressure situation.

we could have ran it all day like the Raiders, but why do that when we already know we can run the ball

Early on Kyle was calling a bunch of 3 step drops and Trey was gun shy. No two ways around it. That ball should have been coming out as soon as he hit his back foot.

Sounds like Tayler Hawkins is in the mix as a fourth or fifth safety. Especially with Odom hurt.
#49ers training camp day 14 notes (🧵):
— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) August 15, 2023
- Practice started a little later today coming off the Sunday game. Team wouldn't practice on Tuesday after a Sunday game during season. A warm one in Santa Clara but nothing compared to last week in Vegas.
