Some want a speedy WR. The problem is that when you are drafting late in each round you aren't as likely to get the best players. They have to rely on free agency. Then you need cap space which is hard to get wen you have good players commanding high salaries. Even with all these obstacles they managed to build a contender without a proven franchise QB. They must be doing something right.

True. They did try in FA but felt they should have gone a bit harder. There's been quite a few available in trade and FA over the past 4 years. They've flamed out drafting after Kittle.
Who was available in Trade and FA?

we've gone over this so many times, but it's all revisionist history now

Oh man, TE's have moved a lot the past 5 years or so. 9ers really tried too on a few of them but it didn't work out. I'm not mad about it. It's just unfortunate we haven't been able to secure one or develop one in the same stratosphere as Kittle to help him out.

Kyle went after Hooper before he signed in CLE, I've been screaming for them to get one for years but I don't know why they're trying to find another Kittle in the likes of finding a guy who really didn't produce at all in college like Kittle and hope he does in the NFL. Man f**k that go after a guy who actually produced and see what happens. Kittle was a huge lottery ticket hit and I doubt it happens again, Brayden Willis looks like he has potential tho

Yeah, Hooper was one of them for sure. I hear you. And Kittle has been playing banged up for years...could have used the help for sure. Let's hope one of Latu or Willis becomes the guy!
adding hooper is this miracle player that will take us over the hump.. doubt it.. especially not for xx Mill a year for 3/4 rec a game

We should just keep on developing our young TE's like Willis IMO. We got Kittle and with him we are very very lucky. A lot of teams don't even have a superstar TE, heck some of them don't even have a reliable TE. Right now while we have Kittle, we can afford to hit and miss with the young ones we are drafting, we just need to continue drafting, looking for another gem at that position. With MacCaffrey, Deebo, Aiyuk, Jennings, Juice, and Kittle, Purdy is not going to miss another TE. Talking about Juice, I think we're the only team in the NFL with a superstar multi pro bowler FB. In fact, Purdy's first touchdown was to him.

Hooper at the time would've been better than what we had easily, and we wouldn't ask Hooper to be a top 3 target. Just be a legit receiving threat that teams have to think about and answer the bell when your name is called. Till this day we're still looking at a receiving threat behind Kittle, I see potential in Willis and I still hope they draft one and a TE who actually was a receiving threat in college not just a blocker and pray he turns out to be another Kittle

"Mason has looked solid during camp with several nice runs. More importantly, Mason has shown himself to be the more capable back in pass protection. The former undrafted free agent is not afraid to square up defenders when it comes to protecting the quarterback." On the other hand, when it comes to pass protect, TDP is still a long way to go compared to the 3 RB's in front of him. It's more than likely Shanahan and co. will pick Mason over TDP for the last roster spot, however, if they want 4 RB's in the 53, I hope they give Laborn a chance to compete.

Mason is the best PP we have. Better than Kittle, Juice, CMC, etc. That aspect of his game reminds me of Gore and is going to get him on the field BUT he's got to be able to catch as well and he had a poor drop last game. Mitchell can't stay healthy and TDP can't PP at all. CMC better stay healthy this year!

Thanks Jonny! Love your takes. Gonna check it out now

I love these. I love seeing these 3 LB's compete. And Burks played pretty well in spot duty last year too. Graham is also taking MIKE snaps which tells you something. Could we keep 6 instead of the usual 5?

One thing they do right is develop players from the lower rounds and UDFA, but those are come as they go. They do their best to find OT's and QB's, etc... but who would have thought the last pick in the 7th round would be a diamond in the rough. Point being is that a lot of the draft and free agency acquisitions are luck. What the 49ers coaching staff do very well is developing the players they do get from the draft and free agency. Kris Kocurek anybody?

Luck is one of the most important parts of sports. Luck in having someone fall to you in the draft. Lucj that the picks translate to the pros. Luck that they stay healthy. Luck that the breaks go your way.

With regards to the TE position, I think they used up all their TE luck on Kittle. Now they don't have any for Latu and Brayden.

On a more serious note we lost a good TE coach Jon Embree, and the guy who replaced him - Brian Fleury, isn't as good as Embree in my opinion. I think Latu was Fleury's pick while Brayden was Adam's pick.
TDPs pass protection/blitz pickup is horrendous. Good god. Imo he's unplayable if that doesn't improve. He's going to get our QB killed

Lawrence Phillips agrees!

Dude supposedly worked on his running which does look better but bro.. How do you not work on pass protection? Purdy is way too valuable to have someone this bad at PP in there.

I think TDP is still #4. Frankly, I would not be surprised if they traded him.

Based on what exactly? Mason has delivered in the regular season. Plus TDP really struggles to pass block it seems as well.

The lance factor. Who cares how they have done in real NFL games. It's all about that potential that's never been shown that makes them better.
Viewing TDPs pass pro again from yesterday

Mcnichols also almost got trey killed
