We are flying into San Jose for the game against Dallas. Is there a particularly family friendly/safe area within San Jose or Santa Clara to book a hotel? I was in San Francisco last year on business and there were homeless people everywhere. Trying to avoid that this time, I'll have my family with me.

We stay at one of the hotels close to the stadium and go out to restaurants and such by Uber. It is too much driving to go around and visit too much of the bay area in a short time, you'll spend all your time in a rental car. Maybe pick out a day trip or something like the Winchester House or rent a car and run over to Santa Cruz on Saturday, go out to a nice dinner then spend Sunday hanging at the tailgate section.

Ahhhh so a fairly short trip. We only make it to a game in SF every 4-5 years but when we go we make a week of it and 100% stay in the city. Homeless are pretty much everywhere you go so it doesn't really bother us. The Bay Area is my favorite place on earth.

I would go this route as well. The hyatt and hilton are next to the stadium a short 7-10 min walk to stadium. The hotels are full of fans and at times opposing fans. A very fun atmosphere. You can always uber to any restaurants. If you want more active lively atmosphere where there is plenty of restaurants i would stay santana row.

There are pretty good restaurants in both of those hotels, or at least there used to be. I haven't been there recently. Pedro's Mexican food is nearby and so is Birk's whichis one of the best restaurants in Santa Clara. I hear Michael Mina's in the stadium is good too but I've never eaten there.
If you Google restaurants near Levis Stadium you'll see a lust of several places within one mile.

If the Hilton and Hyatt are booked up then we usually stay at the Marriott which is also within walking distance....important if you got that buzz. Usually cheaper as well.
I miss the candlestick days because we would always get a room at the SF Airport Marriott. The 49ers would stay there the night before every home game and have a team meeting the night before so we'd run into a lot of them while we were hanging out having drinks and also at breakfast in the morning. Had a good few minute conversation with Mike Nolan at the omlet bar one morning and then Vernon Davis in the valet area another. Just a little bonus for the experience.
And if you were a fan of the other team, they always stayed just down the street at the Westin.
I miss candlestick period.

Just stay at the Santa Clara Marriott and walk to and from the game on GameDay. By far the easiest solution.

One thing you don't need to worry about is finding a good place to eat. That area has so many that your biggest problem will be deciding on which one to go to.
