No way of knowing what happened prior to this trade, but one thing I could imagine is the scenario where Trey goes to JL and Kyle and says, "guys, I have been a good team member, but the way things look now, I may never get to start if i stay here…maybe I'm just jinxed being here. Would you please look for a team to trade me to/?"
No idea if that even came close to happening, but if it did, I bet JL went out of his way to make it happen. I think they would have done something just like this , especially if the player had been a "good scout" …but Trey could read the tea leaves and he was not starting here. He also hadn't played , really , in in 3 yrs here, plus another covid yr at NDSU, and only 1 yr of college ball before that. His time clock was running out just like a 40 yr old woman who wants to get pregnant starts worrying once she hits 40. Trey was a good teammate, he MAY be a really fine QB in time and with PT under his belt.
But the Cowboys? Hmmm. Well, Dak is this "wunderkind" in DAL , but he sure doesn't look like a guy who is going to win the SB. So maybe Trey can work up to Q2 in DAL and then get some reps, and finally start. But altho I hoped Trey would have success here, i don't hope for that in DAL. They are , after all , one of our all time nemeses.
Trey got picked way above his true value and it was a mistake…primarily in his total lack of football experience. Ok, so we goofed. Well, we made up for that with a WAG (wild azz guess) on last pick in the draft…Brock. We did pass on him 6 times but 31 other teams passed on him 7 times. So yeah, we got lucky…damn lucky. However it is what it is. We got robbed by health issues the last 4 yrs, and then another 4 yrs before that. As they say in the bigs, "that's the way the ball bounces"….and yes, we were way overdue for some for incredible luck…which we got. Still our guys were smart enough to be THE team that took Brock. The pendulum always swings back, and with Brock, that is exactly what happened.
I think John and kyle wanted to do good by TRey, due to some really strange circumstances ever since his "3 FIRSTS" pick. And big Jer was only too happy to help us out. Besides it gave him the thing he craves more than life itself…attention, glory, in the media.and at home.
So I hope Trey doesn't end up being what we had hoped for (because it is DAL on the other end of this), but , ummm……there is the other little matter of that $10 mil per salary that we no longer have for a 3rd string QB….and i hope by now some of that money is in Nicky B's hands.
The only other scenario i could imagine was Kyle's and John's willingness to pay 3 guys salaries to keep 3 starter caliber QBs on active so we could secure a very good QB in case both the others got injured. I do believe they at least had that in the back of their minds, but then reality set in and they knew they had to trade Trey…not just for their sakes, but also Trey's. And paying 3 starter QBs is just one too many.
Ok, guys , now put this to bed and for heaven's sakes, pay Nick what he is worth. He deserves the biggest best salary of any DE in football, or any DT for that matter. Do it…please…
But ashamed? Nah, fuggedaboudit.
