But the whole process was f**ked from the start and damn near every step of the way. Hope he turns into a quality player. Sucks he went to Dallas, but whatever. Time to move on.
I will say it was a series of unfortunate events for Trey and the 9ers but I'm really not sure how things could be different.
Year 1: I think we all agree Jimmy starts and Trey learns
Year 2: I think Trey is at best the #2 QB if not #3 QB on the roster. 9ers invested a lot in him so he gets the #1 spot. I don't believe for an instant that he was a better QB than Jimmy by the end of the camp. But I think the logic is he starts off worse than Jimmy at the start of the season but goes through growing pains and you hope that he eclipses Jimmy by the end of the season. It's worth the risk and I'm sure the team can understand that.
Then we have all the injuries… Purdy comes in and does what he does and it changed the calculus completely. After year 2. If not for Purdy than Kyle would have a Trey designed offense for this year and we'd be doing the growing pains again.
Year 3: As long as Purdy recovers from injury he has to be the starter. You can't ask Trent Williams, Deebo, BA, CMC, Bosa, Hargrove, Warner and company to not play the best QB on the team. Their window is now. It's a pretty easy decision that Purdy gets the job.
Then question becomes, do you have two offenses because Purdy and Trey play different games. Purdy runs a traditional Kyle offense but obviously that doesn't play to Trey strengths.
QB1 and QB2 need to run the same offense IMO so it's no surprise to me, as I said a month ago, that Sam wins the job.
Given all of that, what should have been done differently?
edit: oh and Trey asked to be traded, from reporting not his mouth, so they were good stewards of their employees and traded him to Dallas. I truly believe that they don't trade him if he doesn't ask to be traded but 3rd string makes sense.
