for all the success we have enjoyed picking in the late rounds and getting gems like Fred Warner, George Kittle, Talanoa Hufuanga, it was very interesting to look back and see all the draft whiffs this team made in the early rounds !!

Let's look back at the first round picks this regime made

2017: Solomon Thomas (#3)
Reuben Foster (#31)
2018: Mike McGlinchey (#9)
2019: Nick Bosa (#2)
2020: Jevon Kinlaw (#14)
Brandon Aiyuk (#25)
2021: Trey Lance (#3)

2 out of 7 were hits! Nick Bosa was a can't miss prospect
but we had 3 top 3 picks, 5 top 13 picks
to only come out with 2 picks that hit is really unacceptable !!

when we go for top player available, we hit well!
but when we go for need, we end up with duds like Thomas, Kinlaw, Mcglinchey.
So if we swapped all the all pros to the first and had all the late round guys not perform would you be happier with the same result?

No I'd rather have half my 1st rd picks hit, while getting the gems in later rounds as we did

just pointing out , we had high draft picks and we are not hitting on them
Lynch/Kyle draft base on feels and fits, they don't take the best player available like the Ravens and Steelers etc.
Should we do this with the other 31 teams as well?
No one has ever pointed this out before
Idk who's worse with the first round picks, Kyle or Jim ?

Well, McGlinchey was an actual positive.

Look at Bill Walsh in the first round

1980- Earl Cooper (great rookie season....marginal career)
Jim Stuckey (marginal career 17 sacks in 9 years)
1981- Ronnie Lott (Best Safety in the history of the game...period..save the post your not going to change my opinion)
1984- Todd Shell (back up player started 13 games in 4 years)
1985- Jerry Rice (Best WR in. the history of the game....period....go ahead and post if you disagree..we all want the humor)
1987- Harris Barton ( superior version of McGlinchey by quite a bit but had some detractors 1 time pro-bowler)
1987- Terrence Flagler (200ish yards rushing in a 6 year career)

You could call 3 of those draft picks real Hits. Lott, Rice and Barton.

You could call 3 of the Lych picks hits. McGlinchey, Bosa, Aiyuk.

You cant ask any team or any GM to go get you the next Ronnie Lott or Jerry Rice, that is ridiculous .....but Bosa and Aiyuk are a very good combo for 2 out of the last 3 1st rounders.

Walsh, like Lynch traded picks around...so when you miss a first rounder it looks bad....because there are less of them.
McGlinchy was not a big miss. We have gotten quite a few years out of him as a starter and he has been a good run blocker

Excellent response post Dshearn!!

And, eman, add Dee Bo to the first round selections and McGinchcy wasn't a bust - he was better than average and Denver wouldn't have given him that huge contract if he was a bust!

I knew there was a reason we ran that man out of town. Crying, no less.
Everyone overlooks this teams early round draft failures. We do hit on guys in later rounds but we can't continue to completely wiff on these picks either.
We should just trade out of first round for more picks in 5-7 rounds .

Sure they can, IF they keep hitting later round picks.

Lynch just converted three 1st's and a 2nd into a 4th and you all can't see the genius behind that. SMH.
