49ERS vs COWBOYS Pregame Thread - 2023 Season Week 5

However, as far as the final outcome was concerned when Stallworth did his nose dive, the air went out of the Pittsburgh balloon, and the Hot Licks became an item.

I was sitting in section 14, row 19, seat 5 for The Catch. It indeed changed the trajectory of the franchise. There was another game earlier that year that was almost as important. The Niners beat the Cowboys 45-14 in game 6 that year. At the time the team was 3-2 with losses to Detroit and Atlanta. When the 49ers blew them out at home we all started thinking that maybe this team was different. I think the team did as well because they went on an 7 game winning streak. Clark had a huge play in that game as well. He had a 78 yard TD that just lit up the crowd. I remember that sight of him running down the field almost as much as I remember the Catch. Lott had a 40 yard pick 6 that epitomized the defense that year..

For me the Catch is the greatest memory. But that day thumping of the Cowboys was the Game.

I was a Freshman in HS in 81 and was supposed to go to that game, but came down with stomach flu and my brother got to go instead. 😤

Lol the thought of them thinking Trey can provide a bunch of useful intelligence is hilarious. Can't wait to beat the brakes off of them and when they're back in team meetings just lookin at Trey like "you're worthless" lmao

I think it's the old, we have to not throw anybody under the bus in public, so you talk him up like sure he's been giving us great insights, wink wink

What do they need tips for anyways? Their defense has held our offense in check both times we played them. It's their offense that needs the help.

Apparently the cowboys have said he has been providing useful insight. Idk how much he could share anyways, this offense is built around Brock now and a different style playbook than when Lance was the starter.

the cowboys can find out everything they need to know from the film, they did a good job against us last year. It'll come down more to who executes better more so than some trickery.

their defense is fast/athletic and has a deep pass rush - so we have to be on our A game. Which I think we will. I'm expecting a huge performance from Brock. I believe he will look much better than the first time around, the experience is huge. It's going to be really fun and a great measuring tool of where Brock is at.

Your memory sent me on a trip down Memory Lane. The NFC Championship Game that featured "The Catch" was the culmination of something special that I spotted the previous season.

It was this game. Against the Saints. A 1980 contest where large sections of CandleMistake Park were still empty and barren because the 49ers had not proven anything to anybody yet. I had just turned 17 that year. The 49ers were still regarded as one of the worst teams in the NFL. Nobody knew who Bill Walsh was. But, if you watch some of the plays at the link above, you will see the type of motion that Shanahan employs in his offense.

This is the game that changed it all for me. I tried to explain to my brother and anyone else who would listen how special this Joe Montana guy was. But my brother had already developed a crush on Dan Fouts. He just dismissed me. It's been decades since this game was played. But I never forgot it. This is when I knew the 49ers were going to be something special. It would take another three decades or more before someone uploaded this game to YouTube. But, I've never once forgotten it.
Remember when we couldn't score in the redzone?

red zone trips:

DAL: 19
SF: 18

red zone plays:

DAL: 85
SF: 54

red zone TDs:

SF: 12
DAL: 7

Only counter to this is that our red zone defense has sucked so far this year. Hopefully we don't give up long drives.

But our defense gives up very few redzone opportunities. 4th best in the league in redzone attempts allowed.
