I was sitting in section 14, row 19, seat 5 for The Catch. It indeed changed the trajectory of the franchise. There was another game earlier that year that was almost as important. The Niners beat the Cowboys 45-14 in game 6 that year. At the time the team was 3-2 with losses to Detroit and Atlanta. When the 49ers blew them out at home we all started thinking that maybe this team was different. I think the team did as well because they went on an 7 game winning streak. Clark had a huge play in that game as well. He had a 78 yard TD that just lit up the crowd. I remember that sight of him running down the field almost as much as I remember the Catch. Lott had a 40 yard pick 6 that epitomized the defense that year..

For me the Catch is the greatest memory. But that day thumping of the Cowboys was the Game.

Your memory sent me on a trip down Memory Lane. The NFC Championship Game that featured "The Catch" was the culmination of something special that I spotted the previous season.

It was this game. Against the Saints. A 1980 contest where large sections of CandleMistake Park were still empty and barren because the 49ers had not proven anything to anybody yet. I had just turned 17 that year. The 49ers were still regarded as one of the worst teams in the NFL. Nobody knew who Bill Walsh was. But, if you watch some of the plays at the link above, you will see the type of motion that Shanahan employs in his offense.

This is the game that changed it all for me. I tried to explain to my brother and anyone else who would listen how special this Joe Montana guy was. But my brother had already developed a crush on Dan Fouts. He just dismissed me. It's been decades since this game was played. But I never forgot it. This is when I knew the 49ers were going to be something special. It would take another three decades or more before someone uploaded this game to YouTube. But, I've never once forgotten it.

One of the worst things about sitting through those games in the mid to late 70s (aside from the bad football) was getting ragged on by Raider fans. They were at their peak during that period.

We got our revenge starting in 1981.
49ers 14
Cowboys 3

Defensive slugfest where the Cowboys bottle up CMC and frustrate Brock but Deebo's two tds, one on a beautiful 20 yd slant, and another on a gorgeous fly sweep with CMC throwing a key block bury the Cowboys and have them licking their wounds.
Niners 34
Cowboys 14

For a guy who has struggled at times to read defenses, it doesn't take much to impress him.

If they lose it will be rough if they cut Trey on Monday.

That would be funny. It wouldn't even be bad for Trey, maybe could go to a team where he would actually get reps. It won't happen though, they owe him like $5M next year guaranteed.
It's in the trenches. It's always in the trenches!

Dallas is going to challenge the middle of the Niner run D with the best pair of run-blocking Guards (Tyler Smith #1 and Zach Martin #4) in the league, and a Center that is roughly the equivalent of Brendel when he was playing well last season. Hargrave, AA, and Kinlaw will be tested big time. They should hold up but it will be a 60-minute battle worth watching.

Likewise, on defense, Dallas brings the best pair of pass-rushing EDs in the league, Lawrence and Parsons. Hankins is enough of a load inside to keep double-teams off the EDs. Banks, Burford, and Brendel will have their hands full protecting their own turf to help outside. None of those three are above "replacement" grade when it comes to pass blocking. McKivitz will need help from TEs which will take away one potential quick outlet pass for Purdy.

In the end, Dallas has an edge in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Kyle and Wilks will have to use scheme to counter.
Can't wait for tomorrow night! Brock is gonna choke slam the cowboys D! It's going to be an awesome game.

i feel like the defense isn't happy with their performance and is eager to have a statement game, on prime time. It's going to be awesome.

brock is also eager to show the cowboys that he's better than last time they saw him and to make a statement on prime time. It's going to be epic.

jerry and dak crying after the game. McCarthy with that scared of look of "am I gonna get fired?". Majestic
Go 49ers!

They had those "advantages" the last 2 years as well. The Dallas OL has been elite for a while. Strange they haven't done much....almost as if the QB is more important....
