Taking a look at every one of Brock Purdy's dropbacks against the Cards.

Thanks Jonny!

Wow! That ball placement on the double-covered post to Aiyuk.
What Purdy is doing in 12 regular season/playoff games... NFL scouting departments and GMs really need to place more value on college experience, anticipation, change of direction.

I like what you noted about the deep out route being indicative of being able to make all the throws. Sure, he doesn't have the cannon arm of Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes, but that's okay. Our bread and butter is short/intermediate routes and the occasional shot play. Our scheme and personnel don't require our QB to need to throw 50+ yards down the field. Purdy has everything he needs to succeed in this offense.

Is this true, or is it seeing what one wants to see.

I am seeing a lot of chips myself. Specifically Backs coming out on Bosa's side.

Hey JD, watching your breakdowns made me realize how fantastic it would have been to have you and resources like this during our golden days. Was wondering if it would be at all possible for you to possibly go through one of the classic games and break it down like you do these. I know there weren't anywhere near as many camera angles, or all 22 film, but would something like that be possible?

Great idea!

If I ever had access to the old days coaches film I totally would. I think those are kept at team facilities. The farthest any NFL servers go back is 2011. I'd literally need a VCR and access to 4949 DeBartolo way. The 2nd part is the hard one.

Yeah, I figured it'd be nearly impossible, would be SO EPIC though. Really appreciate your breakdowns man.

I have the Steve Young vs Joe Montana game taped on VHS.
Excellent analysis as always.

JT O'Sullivan criticized the play in which CMC was in the back field and motion to the slot horizontally. When the ball was snap, he was at the slot like 7 yard behind the scrimmage. I believed CMC ran the out route and that was that one incompletion in the game.

I assume Kyle knew what he was doing. What was the advantage in having CMC line up in that position and run an out route? JT couldn't come up with a single reason.

It was a choice route. Gives space for CMC to read where to go. They were just looking for 5 yards, I think to kick a FG.

How are you able to tell when routes are a choice route? Did you just see the same plays over and over, and noticed that the receiver seemed to run it differently based on what the defense showed?

Well, having Kyle's playbook help. His route tree, any 3-5 yard out route is usually called a "choice-out". Then, it's about the structure. Out of the backfield late, those are choice routes. Anything going an area where there's space for two-way goes and there's been room cleared out, it's a choice.
Here's a look at the good and not so good from the defense and some highlights from the run game.
