Another has already posted a challenge to Williams. I won't say Fahnhorst was better, but he was a perennial All-Pro. Few here had the privilege to see him play, so trust me, he was special. In his time, he was "Trent Williams."

I would argue that Roger Craig is the most under-appreciated 49er ever. Only East Coast bias has kept him out of the Hall of Fame. Like Fahnhorst, he was the "Christian McCaffrey" of his time. His record for rushing/receiving yards stood for a long time.

Willis vs Warner is a good challenge. Willis was not asked to do what Warner now does. That makes Warner a more all-around player but Willis was as good in the role he was asked to play as Warner is now.

I'll add another name from the way-back machine - HOFer Dave Wilcox, multi-time Pro Bowl selection (when Pro Bowl election actually meant something), and All-Pro selection. He retired in 1974 so I only saw film of him. However, all of his contemporaries respected him and feared him if they were an opponent. The stories of the blows he inflicted are legion. Think of Dre Greenlaw without all the penalties.

Bosa has my vote. Dean was special but wasn't here long enough to consider otherwise. Then there was Cedric Hardman.

The Kittle/Brent Jones convo is like Willis vs Warner. Different game/different roles.
Too much recency bias in this thread. I love Warner, but Willis was better and people are crazy if they think Willis wouldn't still be a perennial all-pro in today's game.

I agree with this. As much as I love Fred, I think some forget just how good Patrick Willis was.
I'm taking Willis over Warner because Willis was such a weapon in defending the run game. Both players were fast but Willis would strike fear more than Warner imo. Warner is better in coverage but he can get washed defending the run.

What about Juice at FB? I know Rathman is probably everyone's vote or Hugh who played FB right? He may not be the best with the ball in his hands or the best lead blocker, but I've never seen a FB be as versatile as Juice in my life.

And the other one that could potentially be all time 49er on our roster is Moody. If Moody makes some big kicks and win multiple SB's, he has a bigger leg than Gould and maybe he's our kicker for 20 years.

Willis over Warner for the reasons you stated.

Rathman is the GOAT, hands down. Love Juice and he's a better athlete for sure, but Rathman did it all. I mean the guy had over 70 receptions one season.

I'd also say Craig over McCaffrey up to this point. People forget how good Craig was as a runner and receiver. Over 1,000 at both in one season. WAY ahead of his time.

I'd forgotten that clip from my early days was still around.

You guys are all too young apparently to remember Dave Wilcox. He was a tremendous LB and is in the HOF. Of course Willis was great even though his career was cut short. I can't say that CMC is better than Frank Gore yet. Hugh McElhennny was everything that CMC was during his era. He returned punts and was a great runner. He didn't catch as many passes because the game was different then. You can't just look at his stats because he had to share his carries with Joe Perry. Both are in the HOF.

I'm not ready to say Bosa is better than Haley, Fred Dean or Cedric Hardman. He has to have a few years of success. Hardman had 122 sacks with double numbers in 6 of his 12 seasons. Half of them were in 14 game season and teams didn't pass as much as they do now so he had fewer opportunities.

Kittle is the one guy on that list that I agree with. No argument there. The Niners have had a lot of great tackles. Starting with HOFer Bob St. Clair. Fahnhorst and Barton were both terrific. I think that position is a little harder to evaluate because the line play isn't as obvious.

I like the players on this team but to say that 5 are among the top 22 all time is stretching it a little. You have to consider that they haven't won a SB yet.

What if CMC gets 2000 rushing and 1000 receiving though? I think he's on pace for something like that.

Craig was a beast, I played his son in my first ever game in pop Warner he scored like 7 touchdowns against us lol

let's add the punter

You really wanna choose violence over disrespecting Andy Lee

I liked Andy in that era, but listen to Pat McAfee, who was in fact, an NFL punter. He talks about the two. Says Lee was just straight banging the ball. Wish has every club one can have in the bag. It's a dif and imo a superiority. Give me Wish. I wasn't around for Tommie Davis era.

I'm taking Lee all day every day. Wish is inconsistent in his career but he's been great this season.

Lee was a gangster.
