Defense goes from bad to really bad. I assume that hiring internally was their preference but if no one leaps out at you, especially since Kocurek doesn't want the job, why force it?

I don't think they move off of Wilks, just letting him leave quietly in the offseason, but if they did make a move, I'd call Zimmer up and throw the bag at him, give him the bye to get up to speed and figure out his approach with this lineup.

Never thought Id be saying this defense was a liability . Had no confidence today they could stop them

It could get worse with the run of games we've got coming up.
Yea he's not getting fired. I don't understand the lack of stunts and twists. Gotta mix it up when the front 4 isn't getting it done. DR and Saleh would mix up the fronts and move guys around. How bout blitzing Greenlaw or Huf? So sick of that wack as slot cb blitz that Oliver never disguises. And Huf has totally disappeared in this scheme.

Player wise it really is puzzling that we don't have one run stuffer on the roster. Especially playing the wide 9. We have an entire d line of penetrators. CF has been a downgrade setting the edge. Ebukam was great at that. Hargrave Givens and AA aren't know run stuffers. Kinlaw or Kalia Davis? The middle of the defense is just soft and that's a personnel issue. Our cbs just aren't good. I'd prefer not giving such big cushions but I understand why. They did play better in the 2nd half win they played tighter coverage. Wilks boy Oliver is picked on alot but Lenior and Ward are picked on just as much. We have 0 depth at CB.

Bad or really bad what does that change? either way it adds up to a lost season, I'd rather go down swinging than simply stand pat.

Love the Zimmer idea that would be a ballsy move.
Tell me ONE thing on Def that we're actually doing well? It would be one thing if we were shutting down at least one part of the game but we're not stopping anything. It's the softest run def AND pass def I've seen in years.

Too many studs on our defense for anywhere close to this. That's why it falls on Wilks. He won't be fired but we will pay the price
Fire him now. We Are a joke.

That's my issue too. We aren't doing really anything well. These past few weeks we have had poor run d, given up a ton of short easy 7-10 yards passes, given up the long play, getting a very limited pass rush, not good in the red zone, etc.

that's why I'm not sure it can get any worse if we fire Wilkes. It's been awful already.

He wont be fired, it's midseason. He needs to do some studying or something during the bye week. Make a change, maybe be on the sidelines instead of in the booth...something.

If Lynch does make a blockbuster trade, it might help
Never thought I would say this but I rather have Jimmy Raye as Niners defensive coordinator right now than Steve Wilks !

Yes it's that bad
Everybody who keeps saying it's too late:

In 2012, the Ravens fired their OC in December. They then went on to win the Super Bowl.

It absolutely could happen. Though it's only been 8 games...
We have regressed heavily in every part of defensive statistics. There used to be things we excelled in, but now we suck at everything. This has been the norm for Wilks as a DC. In fact not once has he improved a defense. He was hired for one reason only and that is potential 3rd round picks.

It would be funny if Wilks pulled his rubber mask off and Jimmy Raye was under there. No wonder why he's up in the booth.

Wilks primary runs a 4-2-5 defense. This means there's 4 lineman, two linebackers and 5 defensive backs. He's also someone who blitzes a lot.

That's different then what we ran under Salah and Ryans, which was a 4-3 with Bosa usually being out wide (this is the wide-9) where he could just focus on rushing (which is his strength). Ryans last year also was middle of pack in regards to blitzing. O

The issue we're running into is that we don't have the personal in the secondary to run a 4-2-5 defense. Oliver has been an absolute failure as the slot corner, and we're trading a linebacker for him, which is effecting the run game defense.

We're also failing to generate any pass rush with the front four, which, combined with the secondary playing a soft zone, is leaving the middle of the field wide-ass open, and teams are exploiting that.
