But if we are two seed, it is not possible to play both. We would only potentially play one of them?

Grrrr.. my head hurts.

Yeah, if we get the 1 seed we'll likely play both since whoever wins the south will just get steamrolled by Philly or Dallas in the 5 seed.

The Lions could blow it to GB or Minnesota, so it's still possible to avoid one of them in the divisional. Regardless, I think it's better for this team to get some rest, because they can beat anyone if they're healthy.

The rams could definitely beat the lions if that's the 3 6 match. Hell, the rams could beat the eagles if that's the 2 7 match

Agreed.

Hate the Rams but it would be pretty funny to watch them beat the better overall roster in Detroit with Stafford, while Goff crumbles under the pressure.
The Rams might be better than people think, well coached, good QB.

I want to knock the Rams outta the playoffs
Nice to have some breathing room but too early to pop the champagne yet.

While it's not likely to lose the next 2 out of 3 it's still not impossible with the Ravens and Rams still to go and given that we had a 3 game losing streak against teams we probably shouldn't have lost too I don't want to take anything for granted.

Washington is no cakewalk considering it's flying across the country after a late mnf game.

If we clinched #1 seed before week 18 but could keep rams out of the playoffs, would you play our starters 4 quarters?

Yea, the schedule isn't the easiest but I think we're in great position to get this #1 seed and will be favored in every matchup moving forward.

I would love to win the next 2 that way we could rest key players vs the Rams week 18 and essentially have 2 weeks off for injured players to get healthy before the next game. That might hurt Purdy/CMC MVP odds though.

I think you take the rest. a two week stretch with no games for your players going into the toughest games of the year can only help

I don't think it would hurt their odds especially if Purdy looks good against the Ravens. Basically if Purdy out performs Lamar and wins against the Commanders, he has the MVP gift wrapped to him. If he doesn't win it after that, something is fishy going on.

CMC has a much tougher road and would need an extra game like the Rams game to do something otherwordly to win the MVP.

It can also hurt momentum. That's why rest vs rust is always a debate. I think a week off is good for the body, but too much might affect timing and precision with how this offense is playing right now.

IMO the Rams are the most dangerous team other than the Niners in the NFC going into the playoffs. Nakua, Kupp, Kyren Williams and Stafford are on fire right now. Williams has been over 100 yards in 5 of his last 6 games. Our defense is better than theirs, but their offense can put up a lot of points, and we've struggled with both Kupp and Nakua. We've especially been burned in the slot, so I'm definitely more confident with Lenoir's emergence, but they're going to be a tough team.

Yeah, the Rams can definitely give us issues with a quick passing game. Their WR's have the short area quickness to beat our CB's, and it can negate our pass rush. Our NFCCG loss to them a few years ago, was essentially a perfect execution of that gameplan.

Just a difficult gameplan for them to run though, because it does rely on long, extended drives. They pretty much have to play perfectly--- QB has to play with a ton of discipline, and the offense can't take negative yardage via sacks/TFL, or penalties.

They can make it a game. But I honestly think our offense is too explosive. If we can get a bit of a lead by the fourth quarter, they become one-dimensional and clock becomes a factor.

Lastly, Mooney Ward wasn't on our team when Kupp/OBJ destroyed us. Our CB's are playing with a ton of confidence now. I can see them challenging the Rams WR's on pivotal third and 6's, and shut down drives.

I'm curious how Shanahan handles a week 18 where we have nothing to play for. In all three of our playoff runs, I believe we had something to play for in week 18, each year? --- clinched the #1 seed in week 18 in 2019, had to beat the Rams to get in in 2021, and we had to beat the Cardinals to get the #2 seed last year?

I think he's talked about it before though? IIRC, his stance is to have the starters play a couple series, like a preseason game?
