Who Backfills the 49ers Open Safety Position?

Now that Brown will start at SS, who do they add to the active roster to backfill the safety position? Tayler Hawkins? Or will they try and re-sign Jaquiski Tartt, who is currently a free agent? Other candidates?

I was surprised that kid from Carolina didn't make it who they brought in who knew Wilks scheme. Hartsfield I think

Anyone know anything about Tayler Hawkins? San Diego State.

Hawkins may get a temp call-up just to backup, but I'd rather move Oliver to be the reserve safety.

Jean Charles is supposedly hurt too, so I think Womack will get activated if Jean-Charles goes to IR.


I'd feel OK with a CB lineup of Ward, Thomas, Lenoir, Luter, Womack -- and a S group of Brown, Gipson, Odum, Oliver

I remember him a little bit. I think he was pretty good but maybe not great. Could be some depth or backup type for now. I don't know that I would want to rely on him as the guy right now. But who knows in the future? He's a pretty good athlete with pretty good size for the position.

Definitely not a completely useless player. You would hear the name called sometimes if you go to San Diego State Aztecs games and I go to a lot of them. So he would make plays and you would notice and hear about him. I do remember the name being called on the speakers.

I didn't know that Oliver could play Safety?

Yeah, I forgot about him. Is he still a free agent?

My brother asked me if I thought that Ed Reed could still play and if we should sign him. Bless his heart lol.

Tartt burned his bridge.

With the short week I'm almost 100% certain they will elevate Hawkins. I dont know about him being the long-term backup though. Hes been here a couple of years and while beat writers liked him, every time I'd watch a preseason game and watch him he was not good. Terrible angles, straight coverage busts, oof

For the next couple of weeks perhaps they bring up Norwood whom they had on PS for a bit.

Either way, if one of the current safeties goes down we're in deep sh*t. Odum isn't someone who is a starter in this league either.

Based on what? Has he ever played safety?
