Who Backfills the 49ers Open Safety Position?

Based on what? Has he ever played safety?

Just my opinion, but the transition from CB to Safety isn't hard. I can totally see Oliver filling that void and that may actually be the better position for him

Lol seriously. Dude's hips were stiff as a board. Insane how good he was in college and that everyone thought he was a can't miss prospect (sophomore and junior years anyway).

I didn't know that Oliver could play Safety?

Well, he can't really play corner, so maybe his skills might be better suited to safety.

He was better than Lott in madden.

What's that dontae Johnson fella up to?

Options are obviously limited. How about another guy familiar with the team, Tarvarius Moore? I know he never panned out, but he's a free agent and still pretty young and familiar with the team.

Just another possible name out there along with guys like Dontae Johnson, or even Jacquiski Tartt although probably both sides aren't really interested. Except Tartt needs a job so he'd be the one more willing, but Niners probably don't even want to pursue him. We're not going to land some pro bowl safety just waiting on his couch for a call, so those are just a few guys familiar with the team, although the scheme is a bit different now.

Other Free Agents

Duron Harmon is out there who's had a good career and played well last year. He's 32.

Logan Ryan can play safety and slot and has had good career. Also 32.

Lamarcus Joyner, a former 2nd round pick. Also 32.

Former 14th pick overall Karl Joseph. Age 30

PJ Williams played with saints 2015-2022, former 3rd round pick. Age 30

Former 2nd round pick who was briefly on our team before Jalen Tabor. Never panned out, but has versatility playing safety, slot, and special teams. Age 27

Interesting that there are still no moves made there. With Beal activated there arent any free slots.

I'm guessing they will elevate Hawkins for game-time to be a backup for both safety spots...but I really expected them to sign at least one other safety who can fill in, even if temporarily.

They picked up Harris it looks like. Maybe for recon?

Thanks ! I completely missed this signing.

Harris looks like a nice find, honestly. We know plenty of decent safeties have gone unsigned for whatever reason before.

Harris was a team captain on defense for the raiders a few years back. Seems like a decent reserve and well worth a PS spot.

Might be a good idea to make him active if he can greatly contribute to Special Teams. Not sure how well he would fit in there though.
