49ERS at EAGLES Pregame Thread - 2023 Season Week 13

Here are a couple interesting stats. 49ers offense is #1 in first downs per play and 32nd in the league in 3rd downs faced per game.
The Eagles will get 18 penalties for 170 yards on us. We get 1 penalty for 5 yards on them. That's a lot to overcome. No matter how much ahead or behind they seem to find ways to win. That's very scary. Hurts is really good. He's scrambling around, scrambling around, making plays off schedule or getting yards running. He's perfect for coming from behind.

The weather is perfect. With their monster offensive and defensive lines they just batter you in cold, wet and rainy. I'm very worried about cold, wet and rainy. If there is 1 Krytonite to Purdy it's that. He has small hands and can't grip the ball well. Yes I guess we are back to the small hands argument and I didn't want to be. But in clean, dry, sunny weather or a dome you can see he's much better and more reliable. The ball may slip out of his hand a few times. Fumble or mistimed throws that slip out and go who knows where. It could go anywhere. Hurts seems to be able to handle the bad weather.

The fans are crazy and rabid in that place and a lot to overcome as well. The Eagles team is for real. Look at their record. They lose nothing. The Tush Push is unstoppable. If they get 3rd and 2 or 1 or 4th and 2 or 1 they can march all the way down the field. You can't stop them if they get close. That's a huge advantage.

If we win the #1 seed is slightly in play if we can get a little Dallas help or somebody else. If we lose not only is the #1 seed permanently gone the #2 seed is in legitimate jeopardy. We could drop a lot lower. With a win at least #2 seed is about guaranteed. Because we have a good chance to win a lot of the rest of them. Maybe all of them.

This is exactly the type of QB the 49ers defense struggles with. A scrambling, running QB. Who can get yards running, buy time to throw, or make off schedule miracles. Mahomes, Hurts, Lamar Jackson and anybody else mobile often give us big trouble. Because even if everything is covered, you tackle on traditional plays, get some pass break ups they still can kill you. Enough on off schedule plays to make them extremely difficult to beat. I'm very worried. But cautiously optimistic.

Nah

name one bigger

The '94 Cowboy regular season was heavily anticipated and delivered. Still needed to win the NFCC, but this game was a measuring stick of sorts to finally show we arrived.

But since THEN?

It becomes very hard to pick one bigger I'd say.

2012 vs Green Bay, NYG were big certainly, but the Niners didn't yet have the SB pedigree I'd say where it was expected they were the better team that lost or possibly the best team (just a really tough out in 2011).

2013 week 2 in Seattle was huge, I remember. I hated losing that one, lol....

2019 Baltimore/Saints/Packers.....similar to the 2012 above.....we still needed to earn the SB berth.

2022 vs KC....really big, SB rematch....

This rematch vs the Eagles is of two teams that have played Super Bowls and lost to KC, and clear cut top 2 teams in the NFC.

Now it has bad blood to it, worse than any of the Niner/Cowboy bouts of late, based off just one game.

This one is big.

The rain might be a blessing in that Kyle may be forced to keep it on the ground offensively, which is the Eagles (statistical) weakness, instead of airing it out like last time and getting his QB injured.
Actually they are good against the run and worse against the pass. Hurts throws a lot of Int's and also has a tendency to fumble so we have a good chance of getting some TO's from him. As to Riddick I say run at him and see if we can pull TW to help take him out.
And if Brock is having trouble throwing in the rain maybe he should think about wearing gloves. JMHO, Go Niners!!!

I don't disagree. Imo we need to stop the run and be able to run.

My guess is the eagles will scheme to take away the run and make the pass/Purdy beat them. Rain certainly won't help, but I'd say favors the eagles.
It just updated to a touch of rain for me. Woooo hooo lol

Not directed at you personally but honestly F&*K the rain. It is what it is. If the team has a loser mentality over the weather they arent meant to be champions anyway. Rain will affect both teams the same.

If the Rain affects us that much, Jed better invest in a retractable Dome or something at Santa Clara.

Stop the run and be able to run will be hugely important to our chances to win. For sure the Eagles will try to stop the run and make Purdy beat them. I don't like the cold, wet, rainy weather at all. Very worried about Purdy and Moody in that type of weather. Plus the snaps and holds. I think both function much better in clean, dry weather even if you can't get sunny. A few clouds is fine. The Eagles don't seem effected by it. If we can get clean enough weather Purdy can do it but we have to slow down Hassan Reddick. I'm worried about our right side vs Reddick. We saw that last year. I'm not sure they can hold up. The left side can with Trent Williams. It's going to be a war and a tough game. I just hope we can hold in there no matter what happens.

Great post! The penalties are what concerns me. Seemed like every time the team did something positive in the Cincy game to start gaining momentum, they got a penalty that negated that momentum. I wanna see us keep the penalties in check and play for 4 quarters.

a couple of my faves, vs Belichick and TB12 at the height of that era, and we got the dub in NE
then winning in LA vs the Rams to make the postseason the Ambry Thomas game

If we minimize the penalties we have a chance. If we have an Bills vs Eagles penalty differential we probably lose. Which is outright cheating. It was so 1 sided it's completely ridiculous. The NFL has to at least pretend to be fair. They had multiple pass interference, personal foul horse collar, holding and some other plays that were just totally ignored.

Some Refs should be Fired and/or Investigated after that Bills/Eagles game.

That was ridiculously 1 sided. Completely outlandish. Many blatant calls on the Eagles were totally ignored.
