I know the silly stereotypes about Santa and snowballs, batteries, boo birds, "blue collar town" etc but they're just that. Silly stereotypes. I've lived in Philly for a couple of years in the 90s, come back as often as the distance allows, and in fact became a Phillies fan in that time (I'm not American in origin, so discovered baseball later in life). I'm still fond of the city, so last year's NFCCG and this week's match feel a bit fratricidal to me. Anyway, Philly fans can be very knowledgeable - the crowd over in the Phillies SB Nation site for instance is tremendous for their knowledge (especially in statistics) and analytical clarity. I'm not saying they are the only good fans, or even that the proportion of knowledgeable fans in Philly is greater than in SF or elsewhere, just that the stereotype of the outraged WIP caller (generally called "Vince from Trenton" or something equivalent) asking for the coach's firing because the team only won by 20 is made fun of by Philly people as well. On the other hand when their team(s) do suck, they boo. Which in fact is one of the things I love about Philly fans: they are paying customers and they demand better. If their own players/managers/owners fall short, eff them. It's not like they are putting up the matches for free, is it? As long as you charge for the "spectacle", better make it a good one. I like that. Better in fact than the miserable whining that we tend to do in game threads when the opponent dares to gain yardage/score points, or when our own players don't make 100% superstar plays all the time. Demand better, don't moan about it. Vince from Trenton has a point there.
The one Philly stereotype that is true, and annoying, is that people there have some of the thinnest skins I've seen. They love feeling aggrieved and hated by everyone else. It arises I think from the NYC thing: Philadelphia hates being overshadowed by NY which they see as a brash upstart compared with them, the "true" capital of the country (oddly enough, DC is not so much of a bugbear, at least among people I know). Then the whole "Santa/batteries/booing" narratives started, and Philly fans gladly seized on it as evidence that the rest of the country REALLY DOES hate them - or at least doesn't understand them. They thrive on a underdog/ugly duckling mentality. We all know about their SB run in 2017 and the dog masks etc, but at least that team looked like athletes. I lived through the almost magical 1993 Phillies run (what made me a fan) and a very large part of the enduring appeal of that team, more than the basement-to-pennant-in-one-year storyline, is how these people looked, especially during the NLCS vs Atlanta: beer bellied, bearded, ball-scratching, tobacco-spitting louts, vs trim superstar athletes and a team owner who married Jane Fonda. Philly loves that stuff.
This leads us to the Rocky statue. This was originally a silly gimmick which even a lot of people in Philly found absurd, but then the city embraced it exactly for the absurdity of it: an ugly statue in front of a truly world class art museum, the Fraser thing (Fraser is in fact revered by Philly boxing fans who for this reason are quite resentful of Ali, if people can be resentful of him these days), the fact that this is a fictional character from a very silly movie in a city where real national heroes helped create the real country etc. So, thin skin outsiders don't get the joke = all the silliness about "disrespecting the statue".

My guess is the Rocky movies brought way more attention and fame to the city than Joe Frasier ever did. Not only that but the statue is meant to represent the spirit of the city.
