"two back surgeries last season to address nerve issues that were impacting his lower body and limiting his explosiveness."
As the veteran of ONE back surgery (Stenosis), you are NEVER the same. Back surgeries do relieve you of pain. They also relieve you of a lot of other stuff. Stuff like speed, quickness and explosiveness. This guy's agent should have told him to play through it and get that surgery AFTER his playing days were over. But, perhaps the pain was that bad. I don't know.
Joe Montana got back surgery and came back from it. But his days as a scrambling QB were over after that. Didn't matter much. By that time in his career, he was surrounded by playmakers. He could hand the ball to Roger Craig or throw short passes that Jerry Rice turned into TD's.
To put this into perspective? Leonard was the 49ers version of Nick Bosa. A game wrecker. An absolute BEAST. But, back surgery put an end to those days. The Colts cut him. That is one long fall from grace.
EDIT: This is a signing that reeks of desperation.
