Some folks deal with losses really hard, and imo, it's good to be able to step back and realize entertainment is supposed to be fun.
Agree 100 percent. For me, it's really about enjoying the season long journey and all the thrills that come along with it… especially as a fan of a contender. Win or lose, it's not long before I'm getting prepped to enjoy the next year of it.
I suppose part of the sports fan experience is the disappointment of losing the last game of the season. I do enjoy the wins during the season, such as this week, so it all balances out I guess. Never have I destroyed furniture, or go into a long lasting mental slump. But it does take me telling myself to snap out of it.

I usually mourn for a day or two but there isn't much of an emotional impact beyond that. Some of that is learned and some of that is just my personality. There is also entertainment to be had in losing. The focus just becomes different. I'm pretty successful at enjoying the highs and compartmentalizing the lows… but never too much in either case. I also try to manage expectations by being as objective as possible. I love the sport.

I'm just grateful for the fact the 49ers are a great team, relevant, and not a chronically bad or mediocre team like we had to endure for what felt like forever. After the 2013 NFCCG I experienced a shift in perspective as I walked around union square in a pissed off drunken daze thinking about wtf just happened, about how can I be a fan but be able to accept whatever happens, how things completely outside my control should hold little to no control over my mental and emotional state. That shift has helped me a lot since we started winning again and have lost a super bowl and several more NFCCGs.
Do I want the 49ers to win it all? More than anything, but what happens happens and luck is a much bigger impact on who wins it all than most people want to admit. Will we have that luck this year? We'll see but like I said, I'm mainly happy the 49ers a great team, and if the luck falls our way this year, well even better. If not, thats sucks but it'll be okay because we finally got a QB and it's just a matter of time now.

In years past I would get so hyped up and get so devastated when we lost. When we lost the SB against the Ravens, I was severely depressed for 3 weeks. Same when we lost the following year to Seattle. In recent years I've handled disappointing losses a little better but I would be lying if I said I wasn't affected.
As we approach the more dramatic phases of the season, I'm going to take action to look after my mental health. Trying to balance my attention between Niner content and my other hobbies, so that my mental energy isn't so locked in to Niner football. What strategies do you guys use to not get so high or low?
I feel they have been on the verge for years. With Purdy I feel much better than with Jimmy. The Ravens Superbowl they were down so fast, and it appeared they had little chance to come back. It wasn't as painful as being up ten midway through the 4th quarter against KC.
We are spoiled as a fan base and I'm good with that. It must be so awful to be a Jets, Browns, Panthers, etc… fan.

Thanks everyone for the perspective
And you guys are right about this just being entertainment, it's not life or death I will keep that in mind.
Also had another thought today: I played high school football and I remember I never was stressed out about outcomes like I am as a fan. I remember just being excited and enjoying playing the game, going out there and laying the wood (I played linebacker). Losses sucked but I felt ok since it was my/our own failure. Maybe that is my problem; I need to stop making other peoples failure my own, because they probably aren't as heartbroken about it as I am. They left it all on the field and are able sleep well at night. Just gotta sit back and enjoy the ride then

If this team is healthy anf focused the only thing that can stop us from winning the ring is Shanahan. Honestly if we are healthy in january I will be more affraid of Shanahan with his unexplainable decisions in playoffs than from the other team.
About my investment on the team I get stressed a lot when the team is a contender because every game could mean the home field advantage or the divisional tittle but when they lose in playoffs I tell myself that it's just a game and my life won't depend on it. It works to deal with the heartbreak.

I feel like there are a lot of reasons we could fall short. Injuries or poor weather or just bad luck could all derail this season pretty easily like they did last year.
Preemptively blaming KS just seems weird, because he has been and continues to be by far the biggest reason we have these opportunities to win a SB in the first place.
As for the original question, I try to just remember that this is just a game and that win or lose, it isn't really going to effect my life in a major way. That said, I do feel a little bit of extra tension this year, because this team is so good and teams this dominant don't come around very often. If they don't get it done now, with a team this stacked and ahead of the pack, then maybe they never will.

My perspective of Shanahan is weird. I admire him because he is the one that built this amazing roster and he is the one designing these beautiful plays that are above the rest of the league but at the same time I can't forget that he stopped running when the Chiefs were being gashed on the ground in the entire Super Bowl and he was the one that didn't give Deebo a single touch in the last 12 minutes of the championship game against the Rams and he was the one calling that 7-step dropback against a pass-rush that got 70 sacks in one season with a backup TE blocking a pass-rusher that got 16 sacks.
Now Shanahan has the best O since he signed with us and this team is so good that I'm sure than can overcome a little bit of bad luck in a playoff game (refs, weather, etc) but I don't know if they can overcome a questionable decision from Shanahan in crunch time.

I wake up happy every morning. Why ?
1/. i've been following football for > 50 years
2/. i was born with 6th sense. No kidding. I have this sense 1-2 a years only, not frequent; it comes naturally out of nowhere. I am speaking this under my honor as a Niners fan and a family physician with near 4000 patient panel.
3/. At the end of Miami game 2022 i posted in several media: "Brock Purdy is second coming of Joe Montana" and he will take 49ers to SB in 2023-2024 season. That is my 6th sense.
SO I WAKE UP EVERY MORNING ELATED AND EUPHORIC WITH THE SUPREME CONFIDENCE THAT BROCK WILL WIN SB FOR US.
Let's believe and be happy everyday guys. We have nothing to lose felling happy everyday. Go Niners 👍❤️🍺

It's probably harder for younger fans that have never seen this team win it all. They've only known disappointment. I used to feel like that prior to 1981. After winning that first SB I felt like they were going to win every game.

The only team that can beat 49ers this year when they turn it on, is the 49ers. Thats it. The SB is theirs for the taking. This is the year, the time is now

There really is no reason for them not to win this year. If we lose it will be to the ravens in the SB because harbaugh out coached shanahan with less talent and won. We are better than them in every facet so the only difference is coaching.
Eagles are not as good this year and the chiefs have no weapons for mahomes and kelce has lost a step. That makes us the most talented team in the NFL and Brock is the best QB outside of mahomes.
What excuses are left if we lose?
Take solace in that shanahan will not make it out of purdys rookie contract if he does not win one by then. So the max suffering can go on is 3 years.
What are you talking about Harbaugh outcoached Shanahan?
It was a rainy day in Bmore and Lamar was tearing up the league that year.....they destroyed the Rams, beat the Hawks in Seattle, a real force all around.
Then January came and the Titans humbled them. The year after the Bills embarrassed them.
IMO, they have a lot to prove in the postseason, far more than Kyle.
