I do believe he's got the HIGHEST FOOTBALL IQ of all the RBs we've had... but I still believe that Watters was a BETTER athlete than any RBs we've ever had..
The guy can be a WR... PR.. KR...

This. Craig is my true love, despite fumble lol.
That video brings back some AWESOME memories! Craig introduced Rice to the Rocklin Hill, that Rice is famous for running and getting into football shape in the offseason. He was the iron man 49er before Jerry Rice became the Iron Man 49er.

Gore certainly did more for SF due to the years put in
we are talking two HOF RBs
If I needed a yard I would take Gore
I sure wish somebody would have told Harbaugh that with a minute left in the superbowl.
The math works- 4 yards, four downs.

depends how you interpret the question, it's like saying Deion was our top CB, are you considering years of service time, or you are you just looking at the caliber of that one season,
you can stack the quality of CMCs 49er run against anybody

I guess you didn't see Roger Craig play? Wendell Tyler? I wasn't old enough to see Joe "The Jet" Perry play, but others tell me he was one of the greatest for his day.
CMC is clearly having a great season. One of the greatest as a matter of fact. But to annoint him as "the best to ever wear a 49er uniform" is a bit much. Craig has him beat in overall production and, most importantly, Super Bowl rings.

What guy? Watters or CMC? CMC returned kickoffs and punts for TDs in the same season. He also threw a TD pass, caught TD passes and ran for TD passes all in that same season. That was his SOPH. year when he was robbed of the Heisman. He was beaten out by the one trick pony Derrick Henry who only played behind one ot the great ofensive lines ever.

Not bringing back Waters was a colossal mistake and then they more or less neglected the position until they acquired Hearst.
Not having a run game in an era where running the football was still hugely important was a blunder beyond belief. That they looked at Loville and said "yeah, this guy will do!" was wild.

Gore had just busted a 30+ yard run to get them in position and came out of the game. That's why LMJ got the first down carry. These guys are human beings and don't have infinite energy. Just something to think about.

Gore carried the niners during the darkest eras we've ever known. How can you even compare that to CMC surrounded by one of the greatest rosters of all time.
SHAME ON YALL! GORE IS THE BEST EVER, PERIOD.
end this fkn thread.

CMC is the MVP of today's offense, but I might still lean Roger Craig for one simple reason. 1988 saw an inconsistant team the first 2/3 of the way through, and injuries plagued guys like Rice and Montana, as well as Walsh's flip flop with the QB situation. It was Craig who held it together and carried them until they all got healthy and on the same page. Craig was an elite player at everything....too bad injuries derailed his abilities, but at the peak of his talent, he was something special.
Now if we're going single greatest RB to ever wear a Niner jersey, it might be OJ. He was trash in SF, but still arguably the best pure runner of all time.

They tried to bring in Johnson, traded for Derrick Moore, looked at Rodney Hampton but they seemingly had no good, firm plan for replacing Watters who had been a crucial part of the offense.

Ideally, Seifert should've retired in '95 offseason, Mike Shanahan should've been promised the HC job late in '94 before teams could interview him, Niners DON'T trade up for JJ Stokes in the '95 draft and select Ray Lewis instead, and Mike Shanahan drafts Terrell Davis to the Niners in the 6th round of same said draft. Niners don't lose to Atlanta in the '95 season finale and avoid GB altogether, they beat the Cowboys again @ Candlestick and win Lombardi #6 against Pittsburg in January 1996. DC Pete Carroll and OC Steve Mariucci help the Niners complete the three peat in 1996 over the Patriots, the Niners 50th anniversary season.
