49ERS vs RAVENS Pregame Thread - 2023 Season Week 16

There's a lot of talk about how the Ravens' offensive running game will be a challenge for our defense.

But how does their defense stack up against our offense?

Their D is very good they have one of the best secondaries and without a doubt the best LB duo outside to us. Kyle Hamilton is killing it for them too

It will be a good test for the 49er offense with their two good ILBs and safety. They look to confuse pass protection schemes and the QB using a lot of disguise. I'm confident that Brock won't get confused but I'm not as confident with the OL picking up on all the simulated pressures that BAL likes to use. That extra day of preparation could come in handy. Don't know much about BAL's run defense.
Go 49ers! Is it Monday yet?!

Yeah... Looking at stats. Ravens defense is #2 in yards allowed, #1 in points allowed, 14th in takeaways.
7th in passing yards allowed, 9th in rushing yards allowed.

Statistically, they're a top 3 defense. I'd say it's the Browns, them, and us.

im predicting a dogfight similar to browns/niners

They are 21st in the league giving up 4.3 YPA but are #1 in the league giving up 0.3 rushing TD's per game.

Ugh. They beat the breaks off of Detroit and Seattle. I am scuured.

Their point differential against > .500 is even better than ours

this is the game with the two best teams for sure and the scary part is they don't have Mark Andrews who should be healthy by SB

Gonna be an amazing game. We better clean up the tackling.

Yeah they mollywhopped two pretty good teams. We have to come out motivated and angry.

They lost Keaton, and when Keaton was activated on October 14, the Raven's were scoring 30+ regularly. Prior to Keaton's activation they were scoring more in the mid to high 20's. Everybody on the Raven's website is bummed that they lost Keaton. Apparently he's a big part of their offense.

he's a flat out burner
speaking of, do we see that Mostert has a historic 20 TDs

The Raven offense looks like mainly a running team. (#1 ranked run offense) They are 20th in passing. Losing Keaton will hurt their run offense, and that's reflected in their fan's grief in losing Keaton. Hopefully our staring DT's are healthy going into this game. The other running backs (Edwards, Hill, and Gordon) don't seem to be as explosive as Keaton was. That helps our front seven contain the run.

Mostert was a great find. But between Mostert and CMC, I think I'll go with CMC.

Their defense is easily the best that Purdy and this year's team have faced. Complete at all levels. They bring pressure in swarms, they have tremendous linebackers and good players in the secondary.

I'm predicting a blow-out (9ers) like all the others the past weeks..

Doesn't sound like they have an obvious weakness to exploit. Curious to see what they see in the film room and how Shanahan chooses to attack.

I think their weakness is their corners, I don't think they can stay with our guys. That and they have to deal with TW.

Raven's are 7 places behind the 49ers in turnover differential. (49ers being the number 1 team in the NFL in terms of turnover differential). 3 more teams have scored more points this season that the Raven's offense has, and the Ravens defense are the only other team in the NFL (when comparing to the 49er defense) that has less points scored on them defensively. It looks to be a pretty even match statistically, but I think with the offensive rules being the way they are, advantage (I think) goes to the teams with the better offense in this day and age.

Injuries are going to matter (in game and before the game). The Raven's have already lost Keaton, and our DT's are banged up.

That statement reminds me a bit of the Dallas vs 49ers matchup in last years playoff game. Purdy didn't throw a TD but he didn't throw Picks either.

Macdonald has also wildly varied his blitz rate from week to week depending on the opponent. The Ravens sent extra rushers on only 11.6% of Joe Burrow's dropbacks back in Week 2, per Tru Media, then ramped it up to 51% the next week against the Colts. And when the played the Browns the following week, they were back down to a 14% blitz rate.
The Ravens are able to change their coverage schemes and pass defense strategies so often because they have so many versatile players -- particularly in the secondary.
This type of versatility on both the back end and the front is enviable, and allows the Ravens to change the picture for opposing offenses. Disguises and late rotations are some of the best ways to confuse opposing quarterbacks, and the Ravens do a better job of that than almost any other team in the league.
--------------

I don't think BAL will be blitz heavy versus Brock. My guess is they force him to dink and dunk down the field, hoping the 49ers offense slips up somewhere along the way. But with their versatility with their players and schemes, who knows.
