Should the 49ers retain Steve Wilks?

Pretty much says everything you need to know about Wilks. Not looking fwd to him trying to match wits with Reid and PM

I'm just going to hang on the idea that we can and have played better this year, and that the Chiefs offense actually isn't very good. We can have a solid game and they won't light up the scoreboard.

Dave Pasch who calls NFL and college football games kinda went in on Wilks, said the defense was underachieving for the level of talent that exists and is considerably more predictable than in previous years.

Alex Smith had some comments about how basic our defense is as well. Not sure if anybody posted but I saw a quick snippet on twitter.

@faithful6

I see it all my man. Alex was pretty basic himself
you check Emmanuel Acho's twitter lately?

Acho detailed a great play call and Alex, and others, are talking about the defense as a whole or in general. Both comments can be, and are, true. I don't think even the biggest Wilks haters wouldn't acknowledge that he's capable of calling great plays.

there does seem to be more of a lack of effort in certain players (not our core guys) this year . the 49ers philosophy is kind of play a team and the run D has been a problem because of that.

our Pass D is a lot better than last year though. I do think Huf was a huge loss to the run D (as good as Brown has been for a rookie). If you believe in DVOA and EPA/play our slide in run D coorelates with his injury
I sure wish we didn't lose Huf:(

I saw Lombardi's tweet with the splits around Huf. As someone who's paid attention to EPA for the bulk of the season, I thought there were better splits to highlight the defensive performance. Here's the site he used (I use it frequently) if you're unfamiliar:
https://rbsdm.com/stats/stats/

I don't understand what your basis is in determining that our pass defense is much* better than last year. It isn't. The 22 and 23 teams are virtually identical in passer rating against, EPA, and interceptions per game. And the 22 defense wasn't the benefit of multiple possession leads in the 2nd half at the level of the 23 team.

Yeah, Huf's injury turned out to be a big loss for the D.

It shouldn't be a surprise that losing an all-pro safety hurt.

Got to hope Jayir Brown can step up, rookie or not, like Brock did last year. Our entire 2023 draft class needs to prove that they aren't all busts.
Hell I would bring in belichick and Carol to consult for a week and have the 3 scheme in a room to stop mahomes.

I'm all about using the resources available.

Kyle and wilks pride would never let that happen though.

I bet it was due to our Xmas game, they in for a rude awakening
9er management is pretty loyal.
He has another year to perfect the system or get a HC job elsewhere
