I'm not terribly worried about the offense except for protecting Purdy, but I'm going to guess Kyle will scheme around it... big if but he has to know they will attack our right side. I feel like we can def put enough points on the board to be in the game.
I am more worried about our defense and especially run defense. Will they be able to identify and shore up the run?
The good news is Goff is a pocket guy. We usually play much better against them, but the defense has been jeckle and Hyde this year so I'm worried they get walked around on long drives again.
I think the 49ers did a good job on Aaron JOnes despite his 6 yards per carry average. Key to defending the Lion's run game is Arik is healthy. At least I didn't hear any injuries on the team other than Deebo. Green Bay could not run over our defense at will. They have to mix it up and pick their spots. There were some good 3rd down run stops that forced Green Bay to punt or turn it over on downs. The 49er weakness is the run defense - but that's because of scheme and I don't think 49er player personnel have anything to do with it.
WHAT? Good job on stopping Aaron Jones? I will agree to disagree, with respect of course. Anytime an opposing RB goes off for more than 100-yards on less than 20-carries, that's not a "good job." I think every 49er would agree with this. But, how to stop it? I don't think you can. I think a lot of defensive players are just plain beat up right now. Many of the players on that defense got a three week break. They were either rusty, or just simply beat up.
Did you notice how Buffalo's defense suddenly collapsed in the 3rd and 4th quarters? That wasn't just because the Chiefs are great (they are). The Bills defense finally started gasping. By the end of the game, they couldn't stop anything. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the last Chiefs TD drive took about three or four plays. There was zero pressure on Mahomes during that drive and he had his pick of open receivers to toss the ball too.
So, it may come down to the formula of just outscoring Detroit. Goff is an absolute pickoff machine when he's on the road and under pressure. That's why the Rams got rid of him. He will get his fair share of completions. He will probably get a TD toss or two. But if the 49ers can get up early and force the Lions to pass the ball to catch up, that's where the pickoff magic happens.
