SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS vs DETROIT LIONS - 2023 Season NFC Championship

A lot of talk about Campbell going for it on 4th, but I'm more interested in the 4th down that he did NOT go for. End of the 1st half and it was 4th and goal, from the 3 I think? I wasn't confident our D would get the stop if he did for it and believed that could be a backbreaker going into the locker room. Settled for the FG and I felt, if we could come out, score and get a stop, we had a chance. While I still think they should have kicked the FG to potentially go back up 17 in the 3rd, it's the end of the first half that wasn't in line with their philosophy.

yeah good point. I was relieved that they kicked it because at that point they could do whatever they wanted and we had no answers.

I will apologize to KS because I still dont understand why he didnt run CMC behind Trent.

But Wilks is still on my s**t list.

This game should have never been this close.

Sad part is I don't expect anything different in his game plan against the Chiefs. Will come out in those same vanilla schemes, wait until they run up the score…then have Kyle yell in his ear before he makes the adjustments.

Did anyone hear his post game interview with Maiocco ? Said he went into halftime, saw how serious the players were….and knew right then and there that the Niners were going to win it. In other words, my scheme is not the problem, the players are. When the players adjust then my scheme works.

Give me a break

Do you ever stop with the negativity? You have doubted this team every step of the way. You can't even take 24 hours to celebrate a huge win. I am starting to question your fanhood at this point.

Been a fan since 1988 thank you very much. I just have higher expectations growing up in the 80s / 90s. I think the football gods set up an easy road for us in the playoffs, not having to face teams that could give us trouble. Yet we struggled against the number 7 seed that took a back door into the playoffs, and a team that hasn't sniffed a conference championship game since 1991. And now we face a guy that is 14-3 in the playoffs and has appeared in 4 of the past 5 Super Bowl. I'm looking at the big picture. I don't believe in luck. This team should be dominant given the talent on this roster. Instead we're winning off of the opponent's implosion. Don't want a 5-3 SB record which at this point appears inevitable…

Yeah that was one situation where going for it was logical. Thanks for getting it backwards DET.

My thoughts is Campbell may have played it correct. A lot of the benefit of going on the opposing 2 or 3 is if you fail, you give your opponent very rough field position. Now in an end of half situation, if you fail, it merely goes into halftime on a kneel. I feel getting points there and going up 17 was probably correct.

This logic makes no sense.

That 7 seed knocked out the #2 seed. And completely destroyed them.

that Lions team knocked out the all mighty rams you were terrified over and a Bucs team that knocked out last years NFC champions.

The Lions and Packers are very good teams. They both beat the Chiefs this year too who you are now terrified of.

All I am reading is blah blah blah blah blah.

They definitely were letting them play. Kittle got away with pretty egregious push off in the 4Q right in front of the ref.

This was one of the craziest punt I've ever seen. I couldn't believe it while watching it live. He kicked the living s**t out of the ball.

Totally get your point and if the roles were reversed, I'd probably take the guaranteed 3 points as well. I just think a TD on 4th down as time expires to go up 21 can completely break the spirits of a team no matter how much mental toughness they have. Given their M.O., I just found it surprising that they didn't go for it.

There's a difference between letting them play and letting them injure players. And that's f**ked up s**t that should've been called, thats Bill Vinovich crap!!
Not sure if this was already discussed but what a huge disappointment that Strahan kept talking and not letting Montana make some type of speech as he handed the trophy to York. Poor Joe looked confused because Strahan wouldn't shut up.

They also missed Fred's face mask on the tackle on Gibbs.

Lots of moments can be pointed to as the turning point, but for me it was the 4th & 2 that DET failed to convert on. Up 14 points in the 3Q, DET drove into field goal range and passed on the opportunity to go up 17 with a makable field goal. WR drops the ball on the 4th down attempt and that's when the snowball rolling downhill started to pick up real momentum. Shout out to DET coach Dan Gamble. He probably hits on 18 at the blackjack table.

Yeah.....I was thinking of the scenario to start the second half. Niners needed a TD on their opening drive and needed a stop on the Lions drive. SF only got the FG, and it looked like Det would at least get the equalizer. That still would make it a 17 point deficit, but with 6 or so less minutes to work with. That 4th down gamble was the spark that I instantly thought of when they missed.
