🏆 SUPER BOWL LVIII PREGAME THREAD - SF 49ERS vs KC CHIEFS 🏆

No matter how many more playmakers we have on offense and defense than you guys, you own the mental aspect of this game. You've beaten us twice and lived rent free in our heads the past 5 years. That goes a long way towards determining the outcome of this game.

For us, Kyle and Co. need to get over this hurdle. You guys are the final boss. If we win, this team will live on forever and Purdys story will be one of the greatest in NFL history. If we lose, we're just another SB losing team.

as fans we play with house money in a sense, cuz we already lost to KC in the big game. So that wouldn't be anything we haven't already experienced. Also, there were moments during GB and DET where although I don't say it's over, until it is, it certainly didn't look good. Very nearly lost to the Pack. So to be at this point, whatever happens, just surrender the outcome and enjoy the process.
We still want to win the big dance. We havent won since 1995 and losing Superbowls is starting to define the 49ers in the same way winning them used to.

Of course it's a cold seat. The guy has done a great job.

At first I was one of the chest beaters, thinking that the Ravens choked, that the Bills were injured and choked, but digging into what the Chiefs are doing on defense has changed my tune quite a bit. What they've been doing to teams in the 2nd half of games is crazy. The niners are going to need to start hot in this game and keep that intensity throughout, if they stutter out the gate like they have the past two games they're going to have a bad time. On paper our outside zone runs with CMC is a massive advantage against the Chiefs D who struggle with those, but Miami couldn't pull it off with Mostert and the Ravens didn't stick with the run game at all when it wasn't working early. That's the matchup I'm looking forward to the most. Purdy and this passing O has the highest efficiency in the league and one of the best ever, but that's a strength on strength matchup and we will need to pound it early and often to have success with that. Shanahan likes to get cute sometimes though, thinking he's outsmarting the other coach by doing what they won't expect and it backfires when he starts throwing all the time when he should be running it. I hope he knows this is not the game to try that.

We're also praying that Steve Wilks doesn't just run a bunch of vanilla shell zones to give Mahomes all the time he needs to find Kelce or Rice while Bosa is being basically tackled to the ground all game. We don't run a lot of man defense but we did last week in the 2nd half comeback and will have to against Mahomes. After losing our all pro safety Hufanga and DE Ferrell our run defense has been pretty bad, Chase Young has been getting a lot of heat due to an inability to set the edge so you'll be seeing a lot of runs in his direction. However they do tighten up in the 2nd half and in the red zone (usually). I'm really worried about the Chiefs running screen after screen because that is something this defense has trouble with sometimes.

If the Chiefs win this game it will have been the most difficult playoff run ever per DVOA. What are your thoughts on why the Chiefs are playing at such a high level after the somewhat down season they had?

Honestly it has me scratching my head. The only thing I can say is Mahomes is a freaking gamer. He got the snot kicked out of him Sunday and loved every minute of it. To those that think the Ravens held us scoreless in the second half they are right, but we didn't need to score. One of the biggest changes I see in Mahomes is his patience and disengagement with passing stats. The last year with Hill teams had them figured out. Play two deep safety and mitigate the long pass. He would try to force his will and get frustrated. He will now play the screen/ short pass game and is satisfied. He realizes that 5k passing yards means nothing if you don't win it all ( ie Moon, Marino, Rivers and others) he has basically turned Into a mobile Brady. It also helps when you have one a couple and they play the underdog role well.

You are right the swing pass outside run is the way to get to this defense. Don't get down on Shanahan, Reid outsmarts himself frequently. Gets away from what is working and outsmarts himself.

Pacheco is a wrecking ball. The team feds off his energy. If he has good success it will be demoralizing and could turn the game. He is running right up the middle and runs like he is mad at the ground.
All depends on how the Niners look first half. Can't expect to comeback again. Wilkes needs to figure it out from the get go. Also, I think Kyle should try everything he can to get the ball first. Niners lead the league in first drive touchdowns this year. Normally they defer and hope to stop the opposing team first drive but they haven't stopped it yet and puts us immediately behind. Niners gotta come out swinging and not stop.

Chiefs averaged 22 ppg during the season and about 24 ppg in the post season. The chiefs have not scored more than 27 points against a good team. If the niners can put up 32, they win.

Defensively Kansas City are very very good

If Patrick Mahomes has the ball in the last minute to win the game, watch out

And the 49ers can't stop the run at all at the moment.

the ravens couldn't beat the chiefs and only put up 7 points on them!! and with our defence playing the way it has. we are in trouble..we keep running this wide 9 defence we will get destroyed ..it is getting exposed, and we continue to run it..we need to run a 5 /2 defence and move the dline closer together because we are leaving gaps the size of a truck and the coaching is horrible as well.

The Chiefs just beat the team that beat us. 49ers have to bring their A game, just to have a slight chance. Go Niners!!! SB Let's get it

In the 1994 NFC Championship game, the Niners surprised the Cowboys by putting their best CB (Deion Sanders) on Alvin Harper. It flummoxed the Cowboys such that they trailed 21-0 in the 1st quarter. I propose that Charvarius Ward defend Travis Kelce. He is probably the only one good enough and big enough to slow Kelce. This will also allow Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw to concentrate more on Pacheco and Mahomes (scrambling).

Then who defends rice?
If Niners lose a 3rd SB in a 11 yr span they are just ruining the legacy in my opinion. We can't live in the past. There's teams with less talent than us that have won SB's since our last one.

All the money, time, energy, and draft picks was spent to build this super team and a good portion of the roster is now in its twilight years so if the 9ers don't win it now, then they probably never will for the foreseeable future.

If you lose the SB like we did in 2019-20 season it ruins the team chemistry and the next season is fubar. Like eagles this season.

I'm watching the replay right now on NFL Network & it's at the painful part. 3rd & 15 & we let Tyreek Hill get wide open down the field for 44 yards. That was the beginning of the end.
