Especially since each and every one of them was winnable at the end.

Don't quit, just refocus how you view sports in general.

The truth is that winning the championship is overrated. It's cool for a day or two, and then immediately your mind goes back to the drawing board and you're like, "okay, free agency is only a month away. What's next? Who are they getting in the draft?" Truthfully, winning or losing has pretty much no material effect on your life.

True, but still sucks a$$. Much rather them have number 6. Three losses by a once proud franchise licks balls.

At least they got there and have been contenders every year. It's unfortunate that the Chiefs are a true dynasty at this point with the best coach and best QB.

I hate this narrative so f**king much. No offense, but it's a loser's exclamation.

I'm 36 years old. I barely remember 94. All I've known since is losing in the NFCCG and now 3 SBs. This team has done nothing but disappoint me. Mooch era…Harbaugh era… now Shanahan era. Nothing but losing. What's the point? It messes with my mental health and makes me unproductive at work and I neglect other areas of my life during football season.

I don't know what it's like to be a winner. You older folks should appreciate your memories because some of us don't have those.

1) That's a problem. It's good you recognize it. However, you need to address it. If you can't do it on your own, seek help, professional or otherwise. I don't mean that in a condescending way.

2) You being a winner has nothing to do with a team you're not a part of. This is a personal flaw that should be adderssed. See #1. Be a winner in YOUR LIFE, control what YOU can. Do good where possible. Strive to be better every day.

The NFL is just entertainment. The Super Bowl is just a game. Fans should be over things when the season is over (okay, maybe a day or two of ruminating ), but then move on. If you're able to do that you're in a good / healthy space. If not, well...your example is a prime example.

Remember, it's just a game. If it didn't happen, or if the 49ers had won, the result should have NO BEARING on your life after the fact. Let it go. I wish you the best

yes, you should definitely quit. If you're so invested in the outcome of a game that it "messes with your mental health" it would probably be better to consider another pastime. It's just a game. In the overall scheme of things, it doesn't really amount to much, and certainly isn't worth stressing yourself out over. It sucks that they lost, but that's how it goes. personally, I blame it on Jim Harbaugh and Colin Kaepernick for breaking the team's Super Bowl mojo.

It's just football. There are more important things in life. Nothing wrong with being a passionate fan, just put it in the proper perspective. You have zero control over it and it's just game.

I don't mean to be offensive but you shouldn't and actually can't escape real life through entertainment, They win this game and you're 'happier' but still dealing with very real problems in real life. Find meaning through yourself, your family and your friends.

I couldn't have said it better than SmokeyJoe. What is important is your life, not a game. The NFL encourages, supports, and defends this deep emotional investment; great business for it but it arguably has gotten to be too much when it affects fans too much to be rational. BTW I've been a fan since Brodie was a QB and have seen so many ups and downs but I have learned to remember it is just a game at the end.
How are you feeling now Young? I'm getting excited again for the draft and FA and the off season and the tweaks/decisions the FO/CS will be making in prep for next year. But yeah I'm sure I'll get a little nauseated if I see any recaps over the next week but whatever. But you do impart a point - you don't want to be that invested where your fandom consumes a lot of your time and energy that will compound any disappointment that comes our way. Detach a bit more this upcoming season. If I have to miss numerous reg season games from being out of market/non prime-time I don't care anymore. It helps.

I don't think the 31 - 20 game was that winnable. We gave up 21 - 0 at the end unanswered. But the other 2 were way winnable. Run Frank Gore from the 5 yard line 3 times and you probably win. An OT game so, so close where we made so many drastic mistakes. Punt goes off a foot. 7 points there. missed extra point. 1 point there. CMC fumble was at least a FG there. 3 points. Total of 11 points at least we left on the field. It didn't even need to be OT. We could have won this for sure.

For sure. In football, as in all sports, you must find the best team of the era to root for.

This is the greatest struggle for me. Every Super Bowl loss the past years has mentally and physically hurt me. I've slept awful and then felt literally sick for the next day or two.

I am the same age as the OP, we share a near identical journey in fandom. I'm so tired of losing Super Bowls and conference championships. I feel like if we had at least one Super Bowl win I could fully appreciate, all this other stuff wouldn't feel so bad.

But like the op, I have no idea how to detach myself from something completely ingrained into my very being.

You had a 10 point lead and the ball with around 8 minutes to go it was there for the taking in the end inspite of all the earlier miscues just like last night.

It was about 6:40 left.
I tried quitting.
As soon as the OT TD was completed I turned off the TV, swiped the Webzone off my browser then my wife and I took the dogs for a walk, (hey at least there's no fireworks to scare them).
Forgot about it.

Then 2:30 AM I woke up and my brain wouldn't shut up about the game. I tried telling my brain I actually don't care.
Finally fell back to sleep.

I told my wife this morning and she said, "yeah, you're very suppress-y."

Not healthy. Stay being a fan.

It was around 8 minutes to go with the ball after the Moore INT if memory serves me.
