Should the 49ers Have Deferred on the OT Kickoff

A little analytics on OT decision:

It seems prety close to 50:50 and the fact that our defense was last on the pitch before OT, receive the ball was the right decision!

lots of things to complain about this one, not so much.

If KC scores a TD first then the 49ers know exactly what they need to do. Makes that 3rd and 4 in OT completely different.

I think this may have decided it. The defense just got off the field after a long drive.

Otherwise, you defer taking advantage of 4th and knowing what is needed to win.

The 4th down is a big advantage, I doubt KC goes for it on their 35 yard line on 4th and 1.

Exactly. We have data from the game itself to show why this was a bad decision.

Sorry, they absolutely go for it on the 4th and 1. We know this because they said they would have gone for two had the 9ers scored 7 on the opening OT possession. This is the same decision making as going for it on 4th and 1 instead of punting. KC was committed to winning the game with their offense in OT, not putting the ball in Purdy's hands to drive the field for a GW FG try. Arguably, going for two on the second possession TD would be riskier than going for 4th and 1 on an initial possession, and they've signaled that's what they would have done, so there's your evidence.

Does anyone know if the Niners had scored a TD on the first OT possession, could the Chiefs score a field goal for the game to continue or would they have needed to score a TD at least for it to continue?

For the millionth time we have zero clue if KC even GETS to 4th and 1 if they start with the ball. For all we know they score in five plays and put up 8 on us.
