And also if KC goes on an extended scoring drive in OT, then that means the 49er offense is sitting for a long time (they sat to end the 4Q). There were pros and cons to both. Since the 49ers lost, whatever was decided was wrong.
I say defer, expect the chiefs to score a td but hope for anything else. If TD, know that you're in a 4 down offense and that once you score a td, youre going for 2 so mahomes doesnt get the next shot

I actually think us scoring first psychologically helped us. Thinking it gives us a chance. To make a stop. Never great against Mahomes. But had Mahomes scored likely a TD first that would equate to horrendous pressure on this offense and young QB. It may have been debilitating. I think they played it right and the defense was really tired. Mahomes just beat them as he often does with teams. Overthinking that one I don't think was the cause.

I don't think so. The logic is pretty simple. If KC scores first, we have 4 downs to match. If we fail on 4 downs so be it. Cuz we went first, we didn't get 4 downs on O. We kicked on 4th down. So we banked 3 pts when 7 was needed. We just didn't know we needed 7 (although we 100% should have known, facing Mahomes, right?)

Yeah 100% Mahomes was gonna score cause that one TD drive he had the entire game that came off a botched punt said this QB is 100% gonna score

K
1. The defense was just on the field and gassed.
2. If the Chiefs had the ball first they were probably going to score a TD.
3. If we then scored a TD the OT rules revert back to sudden death and the Chiefs get the ball.

Kyle was resting his defense and playing for 3rd possesion.

I have no problem with it.
I heard the results of a national survey of football people and 49.3 said they should have taken it first and 50.7 said they should defer. Basically 50/50. Not surprising since this format has never happened before in a SB and there is no sure fire way to know which is better. If the score is still tied after the first possession then taking the ball first gives you the advantage.Obviously kicking a FG on that 1st possession makes you vulnerable but a rested defense needs to do their job and stop the other team or hold them to a FG.

Exactly. But of course the results of this game will make it so no HC ever picks to receive in playoff OT ever again.
The idiot should have deferred. The WHOLE POINT is the KC was so excited and pumped up that they were getting the ball second. Gave them an EDGE mentally.

IF that didnt happen, things would have played out alot differently
Kyle is with the team now they are getting ready for that 3rd possession, it will take place any day now

If they did that Mahomes puts a TD in putting huge pressure on this offense and young QB. In addition to the tired defense. We did it right.

Then we would have gone for it on 4th and 4 at the 9 yard line. Giving Brock another chance to win the game.

And chances are we would go for 2 at that point.

I don't get the pressure argument. It's the SB. If you talk to athletes, most pressure is first snap. Once you get hit and into the flow of the game, it's football, which they have done their whole lives. Now sure, OT had pressure but if you go first or 2nd.

Really if you go 2nd it's less pressure. Cuz you know what you have to do. Say the first play of OT is a tipped ball and we get the INT. And Brock goes 2nd, ok, not much pressure. He just needs a FG, and we are in FG range. Say the first play is a 75 yard KC TD. Okay, still less pressure to me going 2nd, cuz he has 4 downs and certainty over what he needs. 4 downs is key. You can throw an incompletion on first down and who cares? Cuz you aren't really behind the sticks, with 4 downs. It's almost like 1st and 10, even tho it's 2nd and 10. Cuz you have an extra down. Less pressure, with more downs.
I just don't think it's so clear cut in principle. But now that in practice Shanahan's argument failed, so it's open season, and he's an idiot, etc., etc.

If it was clear cut there wouldn't be a debate. There's sound reasoning for both views, especially considering it had never been implemented before.

But now that's gonna be forever be influenced by the results of this game, so any future playoff OT game the HC will be scared s**tless to take the ball, even if it's been a 0-0 punt fest.

THIS.

I dont get the pressure argument either.

I WISH we went 2nd. Just thinking of the possibility of scoring the TD and going for 2 for the win.

Damn... Win or lose, you cant be mad at that gamble.
