no Staley, Bill or Vrabel more than likely with that info

Just talking about scheme, I think Bill/Vrabel are multiple enough that they can work with what they got. I don't think the same can be said of Staley.

Didn't the Rams use a 4-3 in 2020?

No. Staley is a Vic Fangio disciple.

I bet Kyle wants Staley cause from what I've heard is Staley is a big Xs and Os nerd just like Kyle.

Yeah, it's far from a certainty, but I think David's reasoning for why this may be taking this long is more than plausible. At this point I hope they are working to pry Ulbrich from New York.

Sounds good.

The 4-3/3-4 talk is kind of pointless. What's really important are the techniques and fits these guys implement up front. I'm more interested in whether Staley would maintain an attacking 1-gap front or bring in his 1.5-gap techniques.

I think the 49ers ultimately want to play fast and aggressive. You can still do that with the 1.5(albeit to a lesser extent), but I don't know how Kocurek fits in that picture.

So… we don't want to change anything philosophically, but in the same exact press conference, we're looking to evolve.

That pretty much confirms what I already knew but nobody wanted to hear: this team has no clue what it's doing.

It seems contradictory to me. To say they want to stay with the same core principles but that Staley is a fit. The only thing the 49er defense with Saleh/Ryans/Wilks has in common with Staley is that they are zone dominant. What Staley does with his front7 is not similar to what Saleh/Ryans did.

Yes, this is true. He will love this part of Staley and it could push him to the top even with the personality issues.
Also Helms deep experience is a plus.

Sounds to me more like they saw what teams like KC and Baltimore did to Shanahan's offense attacking the tight splits, motions, etc. and want to find ways to adopt those things while maintaining their core defense.

Wait, you mean the fact that they're doing an extensive interview process doesn't mean that their plan A fell through and that Kyle has no idea what he's doing? 🤯

Makes logical sense, but who do you think is the best candidate for that approach?

Jeff Ulbrich and Mike Vrabel.

On the contrary I believe the team knows exactly what they Are doing. Nothing stays the same, nothing. The defense must evolve to match the evolution of the offense. To make that happen coaches must innovate. The way to do that without wholesale changes to players is to incorporate incremental changes to the defense, not huge sweeping changes, small effective changes. That's what the leadership is mining in these interviews.

Well just like what Hero says, it matters more what gap responsibilities they had.

I highly doubt they made Donald 2 gap… but who knows.
